A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO MARK O’LEARY!

This is an incredible achievement for Irish diving and underwater photography!

Irish underwater photographer Mark O’Leary has been crowned the 2026 British & Irish Underwater Photography Champion (BIUPC), taking the overall title with this stunning wide-angle portrait of a dolphin.

The BIUPC is a particularly demanding competition, photographers have just 24 hours to capture, process and submit their images in British or Irish waters. This year, 29 photographers submitted 78 images, with Mark’s photograph selected as the overall winner.

Mark is a member of both Kilkee Sub Aqua Club and University of Limerick Sub Aqua Club, and this is a fantastic achievement not only for Mark, but for the wider Diving Ireland community and Irish underwater photography.

Everyone at Diving Ireland is incredibly proud of Mark and delighted to see his talent recognised at this level.

Marine Life Spotlight: Squat Lobster

You might call it a lobster, but squat lobsters aren’t actually “true” lobsters!

These colourful little crustaceans are more closely related to hermit crabs and porcelain crabs. Their distinctive flattened bodies allow them to tuck themselves into rocky crevices, beneath ledges and among reef structures — exactly the sort of places Irish divers can encounter them.

Marine science fact: Squat lobsters belong to the infraorder Anomura. Unlike true lobsters, their fifth pair of legs is greatly reduced and often hidden beneath the body, where they can help with cleaning the gills.

They’re an important part of the marine food web, feeding on small organisms and organic material while themselves providing food for larger predators.

Next time you’re exploring an Irish reef, take a closer look into the cracks and crevices — there’s an incredible amount of life hiding in plain sight.

A great day for instructor development in Athlone!

Last weekend saw the Diving Ireland National Moniteur Juror Course take place, with 15 Moniteur instructors beginning their journey towards becoming Moniteur 2 star examiners.

The Juror Course develops the skills required to assess divers and instructors consistently and fairly across the Diving Ireland system, covering assessment theory, practical and instructional assessment, written work, jury scenarios and the Examiner/Assessor Code of Conduct.

Following the course, our new trainee examiners will build experience across a range of Diving Ireland assessments as they work towards their Moniteur** qualification.

Congratulations to all 15 candidates and a huge thank you to everyone involved in delivering the course and supporting the next generation of Diving Ireland Examiners.

Marine Life Spotlight: The Spider Crab

Ireland’s waters are home to some incredible marine life — including the impressive spider crab.

Despite their intimidating appearance, spider crabs are generally scavengers, feeding on a mixture of algae, shellfish, worms and other material they find on the seabed. Their long legs help them move across rocky and sandy habitats, while their tough, spiny shells provide protection from predators.

One particularly clever form of camouflage is known as decorating: spider crabs can attach pieces of algae, sponge and other marine organisms to their shells, helping them blend into their surroundings.

Like other crustaceans, they must moult their hard exoskeleton in order to grow. Immediately after moulting, their new shell is soft, leaving them particularly vulnerable until it hardens.

Ireland’s underwater world is full of fascinating species — sometimes you just need to get beneath the surface to meet them. 🌊🤿

More diving grades achieved!

It’s great to see divers continuing to progress and achieve new grades right across the country!

A big congratulations to three new D2 divers from Cork Sub Aqua Club, along with an Advanced Nitrox qualification successfully completed.

There’s still plenty of time to work towards your next diving grade before the winter arrives. Have a chat with your Diving Officer and see what opportunities are available in your club or region.

A huge thank you to all of the instructors, examiners and volunteers across Diving Ireland who give their time and expertise to make these courses and qualifications possible.
