The Origins of GreenTeam Fitness

GreenTeam was established in 2014 by Clare Ryan. I struggled with my own health & fitness in my teens & twenties, chronically fatigued & unmotivated, most likely from anaemia. In my late twenties I improved my diet & a turning point came after walking the mini-marathon with a friend in 2009. I realised I could do better: I joined my local running club the next day

& later that year ran my first marathon. Over the following years my fitness improved as I tackled more challenging events & races, culminating in winning the Achill Ultramarathon in 2016. As my fitness improved, my quality of life & general positivity did also, so in 2014 I decided to switch careers & retrain as a fitness instructor, to help others experience the life change that I did. Since then, I have continued to study & upskill, completing a BSc. in Exercise & Health Fitness from the University of Limerick, & am currently completing a Masters in Exercise & Nutrition Science from the University of Chester. I now lecture on the degree programme I studied, & have a team of instructors at GreenTeam supporting our members.

I leant today a new word: marasmus. It means death by withering away, neglect, lack of food. In 1943, the infant mortality rate in Bessborough mother & baby institution, Co. Cork, was 75%, much of which was labelled as maramus. Today, survivors are protesting as insult is being added to injury: Bessborough is being handed over to private developers. An estimated 923 babies & children are thought to be buried there, of which only 64 have known graves. It is a cemetery, a site of cultural significance and national shame that should not be sold to the highest bidder. My own m&b institution in Dublin has been bulldozed. It's another form of silencing that shows the lessons of the past have not been learned, and the state apology was just lip service.

Please consider writing to your TDs to intervene.

Running clubs restarting this week! The break has been lovely but healthy, community based routines keep me happiest 😊. We have options for all levels, from complete novices to regular runners. Beginners follow a walk run interval approach and our motto is 'there is no too slow'. Improvers is for anyone who can run a bit, eg 30 mins, at any speed. New members are always welcome, just get in touch to book your spot or find out more.

A couple of week's ago, my gorgeous running club and I completed the . Marathons are very special to me, they're where I learnt my own strength and resilience. It's been about 7 or 8 years since I ran one, and to coach my own group was pure joy and made this year extra meaningful. Doing a marathon is a privilege & a gift - and I'm so happy my crew got to experience it, and will have that gift for life: the proof that you're stronger than you think.

I'm so grateful for my generous friends, family, clients & GreenTeam members - I raised over €2500 for , providing aid on the ground in Gaza, & , providing assistance to parents in Ireland whose children have life limiting conditions. Thank you sincerely to all.

Today I learned a new word: Medicide. The UN has coined this word in response to the unprecedented and deliberate targeting and destruction of hospitals, medical equipment healthcare workers and patients in Ga*a by Isra*l. This is on top of another new acronym created last year: WCNSF - wounded child with no surviving family.

The cruelty is terrifying.

Everyone should be literally screaming at this point. What more will it take? More strikes, walk outs, mass protests and direct action required of course but every post, every hashtag, every person who speaks out amplifies Palestini*n voices and builds the movement.

This is amazing news. Israeli bonds won't be issued by Ireland anymore, thanks to the protests, emails, letters and overall sustained pressure by ordinary people, insisting Ireland is not helping fund the genoc*de (in this capacity at least). I'm proud to have stood outside the central bank over the summer, with so many others - waving my 🇵🇸 flag, shouting the chants...and emailing Gabriel Maklouf and TDs over and over. Although it would have been nice if Ireland had announced it wasn't renewing the contract - instead it let Israel withdraw to suit their narrative but still - today a win is a win.

Lordello Bridge, Shankill, 4-6 on Fridays (over the M50/N11 merge). I can't describe what a powerful action this feels like. Today there was a noticeable increase in positive responses and connections from passing motorists - so much beeping, shouting, waving, ✌️. So many people deeply care. The challenge is now getting our government and the people in power to reflect this & not be scared of the political & economic implications- and finally sanction.

Protesting at our Central Bank again. Appalling that Ireland's Central Bank is facilitating the sale of Isra*li bonds - bonds that Isra*l has explicitly said support their 'war' effort. There is no need for Ireland to do this - and it amounts to complicity. 2nd Sept is the crucial date when this contract is renewed (or hopefully not) - so protests, letters to government, and especially engaging with all our banks and financial institutions is urgent. The have a downloadable letter we can hand to our banks and credit unions, imploring them to pressurise the central bank to not renew.
