Katori Shinto Ryu is a unique Martial Art. It is one of the oldest arts being at least 500 years old. The focus is on weapons. Training in Katori Shinto Ryu is based on kata. Kata are pre arranged movements designed to teach the practitioner real combat techniques. There are four weapons taught within the Katori system although I will be focusing mainly on the sword for the next couple of years. T
raining in Kilkenny will include
Iai jutsu – sword drawing art. Kata involving drawing the sword from the scabbard and cutting in a single motion. Ken jutsu. – paired sword kata using a bokken {wooden sword}. These kata involve many movements of attack and counter attack. Once a kata is learnt on a basic level the student can focus on the more subtle aspects and nuances. Paired Kata using a bo staff {a 6 foot long wooden staff} against a bokken. Other weapons include the Naginata { hallherd } and the spear. Nothing is required to begin training. At a later stage it is necessary to own your own bokken. Training in Kilkenny on Mondays 6- 7:30, Thomastown on Thursdays 8 - 9:30
