A clear, starry sky over our local Jamestown Pitch & Putt.
I took some time to read the Chief Executive’s Report from Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council on submissions to Proposed Variation No. 1. This includes the designation of lands between Kiltiernan and Stepaside including Jamestown Pitch & Putt and Stepaside Golf facilities as Long-Term Strategic Sites.
This means the area is being identified as a potential location for housing in future development plans. The report makes clear that this is not a rezoning at this stage, but rather a way of identifying land that may be developed in the longer term, subject to future plans and infrastructure.
However, despite a huge number of local submissions raising concerns about loss of amenities, infrastructure, and the character of the area, the Chief Executive’s recommendation is to continue with this designation.
It raises questions about how much weight is given to community submissions in this process.
While any future development would still require rezoning, planning approval, and infrastructure, the designation itself signals a clear direction for the future of key local amenities.
The final decision will be made by elected councillors of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council when they vote next week.
