When Andy Townsend talks about Italia â90, he always says there was a lot of time to kill.
Hotels. Waiting around. The lads getting bored.
And he said thatâs when âyou do daft things back in the day.â ďżź
Townsend said he decided to have a bit of fun with Jack Charlton.
He did that old coin trick where you press a coin on someoneâs forehead, then quietly take it away, but it still feels like itâs there.
Then he looked at Big Jack and basically made it a challenge.
Townsend told him, âyou have six bangs on the back of your head to get this coin offâ and, if he did it, âI will give you a tenner.â ďżź
And Jack went for it.
Townsend said he was staring at the coin in his hand like it was still on Jackâs head, going, âgo on Jack.â ďżź
So Jack starts âbanging his head really hard.â
He gets past six.
He gets to âabout ten.â
And by that point the whole room is gone.
Townsend said âthe guys are all falling around laughingâ until it finally clicked for Jack that âit wasnât there.â ďżź
Ray Houghton said the best part was it wasnât just the players laughing.
It was the Italian police as well.
Because to them, it looked like âa former World Cup winner⌠banging the back of his headâ for absolutely no reason. ďżź
And while all this is happening, Jackâs got his hand out, still trying to catch the coin like itâs about to fall off any second.
Townsend summed it up afterwards by admitting, âI was very lucky I wasnât sent home for that.â
