TRACK AND FIELD - PARA SPRINTERS GO UNIVERSAL AT FIFTH DUBLIN GRADED MEETING
Paralympic sprinters took centre stage at the fifth Dublin Graded track meet when a first ever attempt was made at establishing an Irish record in a new relay event called the universal 4 x 100m, which allows the best Paralympians in the various grades to combine their efforts. Lining out for the Irish team w was Orla Comerford of Raheny Shamrock AC, and UCDโ€™s Charlie Byrne along with Galwegians Alex โ€˜Blade Runnerโ€™ Lee, Charlie Byrne and Shauna Bocquet. On their second attempt, the quartet achieved a time of 48.99 secs which would put them in the top six worldwide and qualifies them for next yearโ€™s World Para Championships in Uzbekistan.

In other races on the track, Mollie Oโ€™Reilly (DSDAC) ran 24.11 into a slight headwind for victory in the womenโ€™s 200m final. Oโ€™Reilly had run 23.99 in an earlier heat. Winning an absorbing womenโ€™s 3000m was Lisa Gaughran (DSD AC) who pulled away from the pack with Laura Tuite (Clonliffe Harriers) on the last lap before sprinting home for victory in 10:16.38. Tuite was second in 10:18.07. Harry Cahill (Donore Harriers) won the faster of two grade A menโ€™s 3000m race in a time of 8:50.07. Colm Parnell (Crusades AC) was second in 8:53.62. Alannah Cooley (Clonliffe Harriers) was second in 2:22.5.

In the field, Anna Gavigan (LSA AC) proved the class of the field in the womenโ€™s discus with a throw of 52.42 โ€” her second competition of the day. Earlier, at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast, Gavigan had won the NI and Ulster discus title with a throw of 54.42. Second with a throw of 37.77 was junior thrower Adona Zewdie (DSD AC). Throwing 53.84 to win the menโ€™s competition was Eoin Sheridan (Clonliffe Harriers). In the womenโ€™s javelin, Irish record holder and many times Irish champion Anita White (DSD AC) was making a rare competitive appearance and her best throw of 39.95 was enough for second place. Winning the menโ€™s long jump with a 5.22m leap was Craig Knowd (Ballymun AC). Knowd also ran in the 200m races. Barbara Tapia (DSD AC) won the womenโ€™s pole vault.
