TRACK AND FIELD - Great welcome fro Rhasidat!
Rhasidat Adeleke received a rousing welcome at Dublin Airport when she arrived home after her silver medal winning performance in the 200m at the European Championships. Her medal was just one of the four medals won by the Irish team at these championships - an outstanding performance. Among those greeting her were Cecil Johnston and other members of Dublin Athletics and Tallaght AC, where about a decade ago the last great Johnny Fox had spotted her talent. Also present were representatives of Dublin Athletics. Other Dublin club athletes competing in Irelandโs most successful ever outing at the European Athletics Championships included Sarah Healy of UCD AC who finished fourth in the 5000m in only her second serious attempt at the distance and fifth in the 1,500m on the final day of the championships. Nicola Tuthill, also from UCD AC, managed another top six placing for Ireland when she finished fifth in the hammer. In the 400m Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC) ran a seasonโs best time and also lined our with a 4x400m relay team missing its two biggest stars. Of the men, Brian Fay was 14th in the 5000m final and his Raheny Shamrock club mate Eric Favors 10th in the shot, while Paul McDonnell (DSD AC) in 43rd place was the only Irish athlete to finish the marathon. Israel Olatunde (Tallaght AC) and Bori Akinola (UCD AC) both competed in the 100m semi-finals and also helped Ireland into the 4x100m relay final, along with 200m runners Marcus Lawler (Clonliffe Harriers) and Sean Aigboboh (Tallaght AC). Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers) made the 400m semi-finals and ran in the 4x400 heats along with Joe Doody (UCD AC). Also in action were Cian McPhilips (UCD AC) in the 800m and Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers) 1500m.
ROADS
An impressive total of 3,680 completing the Frank Duffy 10-Mile n the Phoenix Park on Saturday (August 14,) were led home by Cormac Dalton (Mullingar Harriers) in a time of 49 min 17 secs . In second place with a time of 50:06 was Michael Brady (Raheny Shamrock AC) who was also taking the Dublin Championship title. Ultra runner Wayne Waldron of Donore Harriers was fourth and first M40 in 52:49 and Tomรกs Fitzpatrick (Tallaght AC) fifth and second M40 in 53:47.
Taking the Dublin womenโs title was Fiona Stack (Raheny Shamrock, W40) who finished fourth overall in 60:17. Jessica Quinn of Dundrum South Dublin was second in 63:00 with her clubmate Eilish Roe third and first W35 in 63:14. Dublin champions in the menโs age groups were James Moran (Dublin Front Runners) M35, Tomรกs Fitzpatrick (Tallaght AC) M40, David OโCallaghan (Tallaght AC) M45, Bernard Geraghty (Donore Harriers) M50, Brian OโReilly (Clonliffe Harriers) M55, Edwin Keville (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) M60 and Billy Byrne (Blackrock AC) M65. Of the women, Monica Holmes (Metro St Brigidโs AC) was W35, Ariana Ball (Donore Harriers) W40, Noreen Brouder (Sportsworld ) W45, Kate OโConnor (Love2Run AC) W50, Orla OโFlynn (Crusaders AC) W55, Catherine Groves (Raheny Shamrock AC) W60 and Grainne Grennan (Blackrock AC) W65. In the team competition, the Raheny Shamrock men beat Clonliffe Harriers for the senior menโs title, with Brothers Pearse AC third of the twenty-three teams entered. Donore Harriers took the senior womenโs title, followed by Dundrum South Dublin and Raheny Shamrock third and nineteen teams entered. Donore Harriers won the M35 category from DSD and Raheny Shamrock with twenty-two teams entered. In the W35 category, Sportsworld AC won by just over a minute from new club Artane Beaumont AC. Metro St Brigidโs AC was third. Fifteen teams finished in that category. Winning the M50 title was LSA AC who beat Raheny Shamrock and Clonliffe Harriers. Blackrock AC were the W50 winners ahead of Raheny Shamrock AC and Lusk AC.
Hugh Armstrong (Ballina AC/Dublin TC) was a clear winner of the Kilcock 10 mile, in Co Kildare on Sunday in a time of 50:01. Second and first M40 in 51:31 was Alexander Wallace of host club St Cocaโs. Eddie OโConnor (Brothers Pearse, M35) was a close third in 51:39. Sixth and second M40 in 54:09 was Alexey Marchenko (Rathfarnham WSAF AC). British athlete Alice Wright (Dublin Track TC) was seventh and first woman in 55:08 was followed by two Dundrum South Dublin athletes - Meghan Ryan in 58:52 and Ruby Wall in 59:09. In the age groups, Dublin winners were Richard Kavanagh (Crusaders AC) M70 in 82:59 and Liz Arkins (Lucan Harriers) W60.
MID-WEEK RACES
Fionn Duncan (Skerries AC) was the winner of the Man Oโ War 7km, on Thursday evening (August 14), in north Co Dublin in a time of 26:15. Frances Joyce was seventh and first woman in 29:16. On Wednesday evening, Sean Doran (Clonliffe Harriers) led home 251 finishers at the Castlepollard 5km in Co Westmeath in a time of 15:35.
At the Liberties 4-Mile Fun Run on Tuesday, Eoin Flynn (Rathfarnham WSAF AC, M45) was the winner in 21:14. Karol Cronin (Sportsworld AC, M40) was second in 21:32 and James Moran (Dublin Front Runners) third in 21:34. Lorna Sheehan (SportsworldAC) was first woman in 24:52, followed by Natalia Lungu (Clonliffe Harriers, W40) in 26:31 and junior athlete Cate Beddy (Templeogue AC) in 26:41. A total of 924 complete the fun run, which was a fundraiser for St Jamesโs Hospital Foundation.
OFF-ROAD
Members of Cherry Orchard Athletics Club were out in force for the Run the Ridge in Derrybawn Woods, Laragh, Co Wicklow, on Saturday with 10km, 20km and 30km options on offer. In the 30km, Barry Cullen who finished 16th of the 101 finishers in 2 hrs 54 mins 29. In the 20km, Aine Kenny (Crusaders AC, W45) was third woman in 1 hrs 37 mins 55 secs. Taking up the rear in the race was the quartet of Rachel Nolan, Sinead Ennis, Samantha Byrne and Nicola Duffy who finished in just over three hours, singing all the way - on the downhills anyway! Runners from Rathfarnham WSAF, Clonliffe Harriers, Brothers Pearse, Lusk and Dublin Mountain RC were also among the finishers in the three races.
