🌊 WHY WE FISH THE TIDES IN THE UK 🌊
A simple deep dive for shore anglers
If you’ve ever heard anglers say “it’ll fish better on the flood” or “wait for the tide to turn”, there’s real science behind it – not superstition.
Here’s why tides matter so much in UK fishing, explained simply 👇
🌙 1️⃣ What causes tides?
Tides are created by the gravitational pull of the Moon (main driver) and the Sun on the Earth’s oceans.
As the Earth rotates, this pull moves huge bodies of water around our coastline – which is why tides are predictable.
🌊 2️⃣ Food on the move = fish on the move
Fish feed when food is moving.
As the tide:
• Floods in → food is pushed towards the shore
• Ebbs out → food is dragged back offshore
This movement dislodges:
• Lugworm
• Ragworm
• Crabs
• Sand eels
• Small shellfish
Fish simply follow the food conveyor belt.
🐟 3️⃣ Why slack water can be quiet
At high water or low water slack, the tide pauses briefly.
• Less water movement
• Less scent in the water
• Food settles
Fish often switch off or spread out until the tide starts moving again.
⏰ 4️⃣ Best feeding windows
Many UK shore anglers focus on:
✔️ Last 2 hours of the ebb
✔️ First 2 hours of the flood
This is when:
• Water movement is strongest
• Scent travels best
• Fish patrol predictable lines
Bites often come in flurries during these periods.
🌊 5️⃣ Big tides vs small tides
Spring tides (big range):
• Stronger movement
• More food lifted
• Often suit cod, bass, rays & rough-ground species
Neap tides (small range):
• Gentler movement
• Cleaner water
• Can suit cautious or finicky fish
Neither is better – they just fish differently.
🌬️ 6️⃣ Tides and wind work together
Tides don’t act alone.
Wind can:
• Push water in faster
• Hold water back
• Increase or reduce swell
That’s why the same tide can fish brilliantly one day and poorly the next.
🎣 The takeaway
Fishing the tides isn’t guesswork.
It’s about:
• Water movement
• Food displacement
• Predictable fish behaviour
Get the tide right – and you’re already halfway there.
