Lesser Celandine is the first flower of Spring along the Riverwalk. It is part of the buttercup family. It has dark green heart shaped leaves and bright yellow petals that open up as if to smile at the sun. The plant was also known as Pilewort. When you see ‘wort’ in a plant name it generally indicates that it was considered to have healing qualities. The tubers (roots) of this plant resemble piles and according to The Doctrine of Signatures, this resemblance suggests that Pilewort could be used to treat piles.

Coiste Forbartha na Carraige is delighted to invite all members of our community to the Launch of the Carrick Regeneration Strategy and Action Plan.

This is a plan informed by the community, driven by the community, and points the way to an exciting future for our locality.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

This video was taken after the flood had subsided a bit at the Salmon Leap this morning.

I saw a family of pine martens or stoats along the Riverwalk this morning. Has anyone else see them? 2 adults and 3 juveniles. I hadn’t a chance to get a photo in order to correctly identify them.

The winter floods wreaked havoc on the river banks and the Spring flowers are late in arriving. I spotted some Lesser Celandine with its characteristic heart shaped leaves. Keep an eye out for them. They are the first Spring flowers to emerge every year.
Don’t forget the big day tomorrow when The Seamus Mc Ginley bridge is officially opened. A fitting memorial to a man who contributed so much to the community. There are also new information signs and an extension to the river walk. Well done to the Coiste Forbartha na Carriga.
