Throwback to life after I originally retired from pro hockey 🏒➡️

When I first retired from playing, I took a very different path than most players… I became the caretaker of an uninhabited island 🌊.

Recently, some news networks picked the story up again, so I thought it’d be fun to share this article that was written about that time in my life — and give you a little more insight into who I am off the ice.

Hockey will always be my passion, but so is adventure 😋.

With lots of new faces this season, I thought I should reintroduce myself 👋

I’m Brock Montgomery, a former pro hockey player from Canada 🇨🇦 now coaching here in the Netherlands 🇳🇱.

In my training, I put a huge focus on skating and hockey sense 🏒. If you can’t skate, you’re always a step behind—not just physically, but mentally too. That’s why skating is always the foundation.

I also run off-ice programs (spring & summer) 💪. With 15+ years of real-world training experience — working with some of the top trainers and players in the game — plus my yoga background, I help players improve their strength, balance, and mobility.

To me, hockey is the greatest game in the world. My goal is not only to develop players, but also to help them love the game as much as I do, so they can enjoy a long and happy hockey career.

At Summit Hockey, I aim to build a culture where kids push themselves, take pride in their work, and learn that hard work pays off. We’ll have fun, but we’ll also work hard and grow every day.

There’s been a lot of interest in adding more training times, so I’m looking at organizing full-ice sessions in Haarlem on Tuesdays, 16:30–17:30 (possibly until 17:45).
