Are you a girls soccer coach?

"In Her Boots" programme is an education and awareness-based programme aimed at the football volunteer workforce across Ireland working with female players (9-16years). The programme will focus on topics that are vital for the participation and retention of young female players in football across Ireland. This new approach to female player development, celebrates and informs all levels of your club on a national scale.

Should children play multiple positions in the Foundation Phase?

One of the biggest mistakes that can happen youth football isn't choosing the wrong position, but often choosing one too soon.

The Foundation Phase should be about exploration, not specialisation.

Many of the game's greatest players didn't grow up playing the position that made them famous.

• Harry Kane spent time in goal, defence and midfield before becoming one of the world's best strikers.
• Gareth Bale began as a left-back before evolving into an elite winger and forward.
• Trent Alexander-Arnold played in midfield before establishing himself as one of the world's top full-backs.
• Thierry Henry featured in wide and deeper roles before becoming one of football's greatest goalscorers.
• Thibaut Courtois was an outfield player before switching to goalkeeper.
• Fernando Torres experienced several positions in including as Goalkeeper, before becoming a prolific striker.

Exposing children to different roles can help them:

→ Develop a broader range of technical skills
→ Understand the game from different perspectives
→ Improve decision-making and game intelligence
→ Become more adaptable and versatile
→ Discover strengths that might otherwise remain hidden

A child who looks like a "defender" at eight may become a midfielder at twelve or a striker at sixteen.

The goal is to give every child the widest possible opportunity to develop.

Whether your child is just starting out or already loves the game, this camp is designed to help players develop skills, build confidence, make new friends and most importantly have fun in a positive environment.

⚽ FC Sports Development Centre: Block 3 Starts February 1st ⚽

Looking forward to Block 3 of the FC Sports Development Centre kicking off on February 1st.

These coaching blocks are built around individual player development, with a strong focus on:
• Technical improvement
• Game understanding
• Confidence and decision-making
• Preparation for progression towards a high-performance environment

🚨 The Difference Between Coaching and Shouting ⚽

It seems some people missed the point of my previous post (and a few even resorted to personal insults), so let me make this really clear.

When I talk about shouting at kids, I don’t mean giving them instructions, of course coaches should guide, encourage and help players during games and training. That’s part of our role.

But there’s a difference between coaching instruction and constant shouting or berating.

Children need space to make their own decisions, figure things out, and learn from mistakes without fear of being yelled at. If every action is controlled from the sidelines, we take away their ability to problem-solve and develop independence.

The real issue is the tone and language being used. Shouting at a child because they didn’t pass, didn’t shoot, or missed a tackle doesn’t develop them, it damages confidence and enjoyment. For many, it’s enough to make them fall out of love with the sport altogether.

Our job as coaches, teachers and parents is to create an environment where kids feel safe to try, to fail, and to try again because that’s how they grow, not just as players but as people.
