Project Spraoi

Project Spraoi Currently working on Digital@Project Spraoi which is an Irish Primary School health promotion intervention. Spraoi is an "evolution not revolution" programme.

Aims to increase physical activity, improve healthy eating habits and positively influence children's overall health and wellbeing. Project Spraoi is a research intervention aimed at increasing physical activity, reducing sedentariness (sitting time) and improving dietary habits among primary school children. Project Spraoi is co-ordinated by a team of researchers from Cork Institute of Technology

. The project works in partnership with the very successful New Zealand Project Energize which has been in existence since 2004. The project is delivered in the primary schools by a team of Energisers. Energisers support schools in the promotion of physical activity and healthy eating among the children. This is done a variety of ways such as leading initiatives, modelling classes and providing resources and training to the schools. Project Spraoi received ethical approval from the Research Ethics Board at Cork Institute of Technology in October 2013. Spraoi staff will help the schools change what they do, and how they do it, not just add another curriculum programme to the full school programme. Spraoi is gradual, not a "big bang". Spraoi staff help schools identify opportunities for change, provide resources where needed, and support the change process.

📣I am delighted to have had the opportunity to enter the EUFunds.ie photo competition.

📷The photo I entered shows the setting where Digital Spraoi will take place: a primary school, where health really matters. The project is creating a digital toolkit that helps teachers bring physical activity and healthy eating into the classroom. In the photo, the children are spelling the word health which is exactly what the project is all about. The photo shows where this research really happens. The picture is a reminder that research and innovation are not just about technology or data. They are about real moments like this one, where children learn about health together in a fun, hands-on way.

Digital Spraoi is part of MTU TU RISE Research, co-financed by MTU and the Government of Ireland and the European Union through ERDF, Southern, Regional, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021-27 and the Northern and Western programme 2021-27.

📌Great opportunity for your school to sign up to the Active Break Every Day programme, starting 19 January, supporting teachers to build short movement breaks into daily class routines 🏃🏼‍♀️
Schools that sign up will get access to a suite of short, classroom based movement break videos in English and Irish 🇮🇪. Even better, a new set of videos all filmed around Croke Park will be released each week.

It is great to see a collaboration between the Department of Education and Youth, the Department of Health, and the GAA. Well done to all those involved 👏.

Schools are being encouraged to get involved in a four-week initiative to encourage bursts of physical activity throughout the school day.
