Cork Athletics County Board was founded in the 1960's under the auspices of Board Luthcleas na hEireann (BLE), which was the governing body of Athletics in Ireland, before the advent of Athletics Ireland (also known as AI, or AAI). The Board is a democratically elected body, representing, presently fifty three (53) clubs and two Divisions - East Cork and West Cork Divisions. As of August 2017, Cork boasts the largest number of clubs of any county, with Dublin next on thirty four (34).

Sophie O'Sullivan and Darragh McElhinney Run in 62nd Palio Città della Quercia, as Sharlene Mawdsley scores Emphatic Win in Return from Injury
Rovereto, Italy, Tuesday Sept 8th 2026

Pride of Place for the Irish was Sharlene Mawdsley, on her return from injury, who had an emphatic win in the Women's 400m, in 50.58 sec

Ballymore Cobh AC's Sophie O'Sullivan ran 4:06.80, for 11th place, in the Womens 1500m, behind winner Nadia Battocletti (3:59:49). Sarah Healy was 4th (4:02.70)
Bantry AC's Darragh McElhinney (7:49.97), placed 16th in the Men's 3000m, won by Kenyan Franklin Kibet (7:36.53). Brain Fay was 19th (7:57.48)
Eric Favours was 8th in the Mens Shot Put, with a throw of 19.67
Bori Akinola was 14th in the Men's 100m, in 10.40

Southern Region Road Race 29th March

Tommy Moloney of Thurles Crokes won the inaugural southern region B.L.E. road race championship over four miles at Plassy, Limerick.

He won in a time of 18 minutes 45 seconds which was 6 seconds faster than the runner-up John Lenihan of Riocht. International Neil Cusack of Limerick was third and Ritchie Clifford of Limerick was fourth.

Cusack, Lenihan and Moloney made the early running and then Lenihan and Moloney raced clear of Cusack to battle out the finish. Limerick won the team award and also took the club title.

Nuala Logan of Limerick won the ladies' championship over two miles in 10 minutes 39 seconds which was 21 seconds faster than Marian Lyons of St. Finbarr’s.

John Downes of Limerick won the Novice Mens title in an exciting race over four miles in a time of 19 minutes which was four seconds faster than the runner-up, Brian Meade of East Cork and the Novice Ladies’ title was won by Geraldine Quinn of Waterford with Joan Haugh of St. Finbarr’s in second place. Cork took the inter county title.

Ballyphehane Road Race A Success Story
Ballyphehane's second 10k Road Race proved a great success — not only for the seasoned athletes who took the honours, but for all the participants.

There was the success story of many children, competing for the first time in a race of any sort, who won the hearts of the large crowds who lined the route.

And there was the performance of 78- year-old Dick Tynan, of Connolly Road, who finished long before the last runners crossed the line.

The Ballyphehane Tenants and Residents' Association would like to express their sincere thanks to the voluntoers of the Irish Red Cross, the gardai, the Cork Volunteer Pipe Band, and all the stewards who did a wonderful job

Sophie O'Sullivan (Ballymore Cobh A.C.) Goes Second on Irish Womens 800m All-Time Rankings with 1:58.60 Run in Italy

Sophie placed second in a strong field, behind winner Shafiqua Maloney (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) (1:58.30). There was another Irish connection in 5th place. Roisin Willis (USA) is the daughter of former Bandon Athletic Club Irish International Breda Dennehy-Willis.
