It was a delight to welcome along a number of our local youth International anglers, who will be participating amongst a total of 110 of the top youth anglers from across the globe, this July, in the Fips-Mouche World Youth Fly Fishing Championships 2026. This world class event is to be hosted at five venues, with 3 in Co. Donegal and 2 in Co. Tyrone.
At our biosecurity awareness event yesterday we were able to invite along the management team of the TAFI Ireland Youth Team, Mr. Campbell Baird and Mr. Brian Kerr. The Team and Federation are running the event from their base in the Glenties Municipal Council area.
All present yesterday were treated to an afternoon of top-class awareness of the different invasives that threaten our shared aquatic environments. Inland Fisheries Ireland Inspector Mr. Owen Kelly started off with a talk on the threats and how behavioural change can help to arrest the spread of such threatening species.
Mr. Jack Porter and Ms. Kelsie Geddis from Loughs Agency then introduced their CALM Project, and helped provide information on how Loughs Agency could assist with biosecurity during the run-in to the World Championships.
We then introduced Dr. Trish Murphy and Ms. Michaela Gallagher from the Inishowen Rivers Trust, to provide a talk around the works that the trust has been undertaking in the Inishowen area, during the last 10 years. Going on to launch their Japanese Knotweed Information booklet, with one for all in the audience.
And to top off the awareness workshop, Ms. Chantel Carr, Invasive Species Officer from Biodiversity Ireland gave us a detailed presentation on what to do, to help stop the movement of invasives across our waterways.
It has to be said folks, this was a top drawer Workshop, with a host of the main players, in regards to those with a remit towards the management of angling recreation being present.
All in the room learnt so much from the event. It was a delight to witness a sharing of ideas, how we can cooperate, and the actions we can all work towards, being discussed.
There was a couple of major actions proposed for inclusion within the organisational element of the upcoming championships. These will be adopted and once implemented, will undoubtedly safeguard our aquatic environments across Donegal and Tyrone.
All at the Deele Community Anglers CLG would like to offer our sincere thanks to our delegation of highly informed speakers.
Our young Ambassadors were presented with certificates and biosecurity goodie bags, from Chantel of Biodiversity Ireland, these will be used prior to upcoming training events.
Thank you also to Mc Coys Cafe Convoy for the provision of a wonderful evening meal for our attendees.
