In Kilsheelan, Ballypatrick, Kilcash, and Killurney area, County Tipperary, we're all too familiar with the perils of the Clonmel to Kilkenny road stretch near the Ormonde Stores. Having lived here and witnessed the traffic firsthand, I've seen how the current speed limits contribute to frequent accidents. While, thankfully, there haven't been many casualties yet, it's only a matter of time before a more severe tragedy occurs.
The stretch of road we're concerned with, encompassing a 2km area in each direction of the Ormonde Stores, is particularly notorious for speeding vehicles. The lack of enforced speed limitations turns this road into a dangerous environment not just for drivers, but also for pedestrians and cyclists in our community. The accidents in this vicinity, most of which are attributed to excessive speed, serve as a dire warning.
Reducing the speed limit on this stretch could save lives and create a far safer passage for everyone. Lowering it from the current limit to 50 km/h in this identified 4km section will compel drivers to slow down and be more mindful of their surroundings. To ensure adherence to this new rule, increased patrols and the installation of speed cameras can act as effective deterrents for speed limit violations.
Residents of Kilsheelan and surrounding areas deserve roads that prioritise their safety over quick commutes. Advocacy from our community can instigate these changes by urging local authorities and the Department of Transport to take immediate and necessary action.
We cannot wait for tragic accidents to serve as wake-up calls when sensible precautions can be implemented now. Please sign this petition to support the reduction of the speed limit near the Ormonde Stores and protect our community.
