The professional contract Liam O’Brien had spent his life chasing arrived on the worst day of his life.

Just an hour after the official offer came through from Pinarello Q36.5 last June, his younger brother Shane was killed while training on his bike in Waterford in June. Suddenly the day he had always dreamed of was overshadowed by unimaginable grief.

Three months on, O’Brien is preparing to become the latest Irish rider to reach the elite ranks, signing a three-year deal with the ambitious ProTour squad from January. Yet his journey to professional cycling has become about far more than results, contracts and ambition.

“When something like that happens, you question everything,” admits O’Brien. But that tragedy has also sharpened his focus.
