The B***y Physio is a bit of a misnomer. There is no muscle in the breast for physios to work on, because breasts sit on the pectoral muscles in your chest and aren’t made of muscle themselves.

And yet, that is what physiotherapist Siobhán O’Donovan primarily does: breast weight management with postural work, through a qualified physio’s (and former international rugby player) lens.

Being fitted for the right bra is an important part of the process. Of all the people O’Donovan has seen as a physio, no one has been wearing the right size. 'I can include doctors, midwives, physios - not one person,' she says.

She includes herself in that, having had her own first proper fitting in her 50s.

'My mother never taught me how to fit a bra because her mother never taught her, because there was nobody standing up saying, ‘You know what? This is actually really simple. Let’s learn how to do it ourselves and let’s pass it on’.'

It isn’t just the bra, though, and O’Donovan works on posture. 'If you think a bra will do [all] the work to hold breasts in the more stacked position, [you’d] get disillusioned and the opposite of uplifted!' she says.

As a physio, she has six P’s of breast weight management: pulmonary function. pelvic health, participation, performance, pain and perception.

A teenage footballer told O’Donovan how she’d have to adjust her bra after every throw-in. 'She would literally be running back onto the field, repositioning her bra instead of thinking about following up the ball and where she’d thrown it into and who had it,' she says.

'She said, ‘Oh my God, I won’t have to do this anymore', once we showed her how to support herself.'
