Cavan Interclub League – Round 5 πŸš΄πŸš΄πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

It was the turn of Lakeland CC to host the second scratch on the fast circuit from Derrylin to Enniskillen, Kinawley and finishing over the top of a slight incline a few kilometres outside of Derrylin.

The weather took a turn for the better just before the first race got going to the relief of cyclists and stewards alike, with just a severe headwind to deal with for the first 15kms from Derrylin to Enniskillen, however the reward was a nice tailwind on the homebound stretch.

With nearly 40 riders signed up, the usual craic, banter and mind games were exchanged between the cyclists before the racing began.

On the road, group 1 didn’t succeed in catching the hardworking group 2, with Mark Foster finishing strong to take a very well deserved first win of his cycling career.

In Race B, DB took the top step of the podium also, with the impressive Keith O Connor storming home for his first win of this season.

Caroline finished very strong to claim 3rd lady home in a highly competitive race with Tracy & Gillian just pipping her on this occasion.

Overall, it was a great team performance again from all the DB riders on the night.

Following the racing, riders returned to the hall where our hosts provided a fantastic spread, including hot chicken curry, fresh fruit salad, tea, coffee and an assortment of delicious sweet treats. Club chairman Paddy Corry announced the podium winners to round off another great evening of racing and fun.

Cavan Inter Club League - Round 4 πŸš΄πŸš΄πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

The Inter Club League travelled to Virginia for the ever-popular Team Time Trial on Thursday evening, and once again it did not disappoint.

Following the mini heatwave earlier in the week, conditions at the start were ideal, with riders arriving in great spirits and plenty of friendly banter between clubs during sign-on at the Virginia Show Centre.

A total of 13 teams took to the start line, with DBCC fielding two teams:

DB Team 1: Mervyn, Tony, Paul and Jamie
DB Team 2: Mark, Keith, Caroline and Kieran

The familiar 46km course, running from just outside Virginia to the Liberty Roundabout in Cavan and back, served up its usual challenges. Riders faced headwinds, crosswinds, punctures, dropped riders and, for the return leg, rain. It was a true test of teamwork, determination and resilience, with plenty of pain and suffering along the way. However, the sense of achievement at the finish line was clear to see, as the Team Time Trial remains one of the few opportunities for club riders to work together so closely as a team.

The great atmosphere continued after the racing, with riders and supporters gathering in the hall where our hosts provided a fantastic hot meal of chicken curry, rice, chips and lasagne, along with hot and cold refreshments.

On the road, it was another outstanding evening for DBCC, with both teams taking top honours in their respective categories.

Overall Category
1st – DB Team 1
2nd – Lakeland Team 1
3rd – CKR Team 1

Mixed Team Category
1st – DB Team 2
2nd – CKR Team 2
3rd – Moynalty Team 1

A huge thank you to Virginia Cycling Club and all the volunteers who helped make the event both enjoyable and safe for everyone involved. Special thanks also to all the DBCC stewards who assisted on the night, as well as those who took photographs and supported riders from all clubs along the route.

Next up is the second of four scratch races, hosted by Lakeland CC next Thursday.

Cavan InterClub League – Round 3 πŸš΄πŸš΄πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

It was our turn to be on hosting duties on Thursday for the first of the 4 road races on our familiar 37km route which never fails to throw up some suprises, whether riders are dropped on the difficult start, caught out on the tricky Cootehill segment, burnt out on the never ending hill repeats from Cootehill to Ballyhaise, and if you have survived as far as Ballyhaise, you just have the minor task of overcoming Clarkes hill without being dropped before hopefully setting you up for a potential crack at the fast sprint finish section.

With the weather perfect, apart from the headwinds which seemed to be a constant, another 45 plus riders lined up on the start line, with Race A getting under way at 7.30pm, and Race B off at 7.35pm
The atmosphere was electric at the start with everyone enjoying friendly banter whilst playing a few of the usual mind games with each other before facing the task ahead.

On the road, it was another great night the DB riders, with Tony, Mervyn & Caroline making it onto the podium. The entire DB team finished strong in both races to keep up our momentum in the team competition.

After finishing the race, it was back to The Stray Sod where every rider had their own individual race story to tell, while enjoying a delicious hot meal of chicken curry, rice, chips, lasagne and coleslaw, hot & cold drinks.
Club Chairperson Tracy thanked all the clubs, riders for attending and thanked everyone in DB who helped in any way to make the event a success and ensure the safe return of all the riders. She thanked the civil defence and the stray sod for their hospitality before announcing the results of each race.

The rain stayed away for our club spin on Sunday, making for an enjoyable morning on the bike. The group rounded off the spin perfectly by treating themselves to a well-earned ice cream afterwards! 🍦

Also on Sunday, Una McGlone represented DB Cycling Club at the Pedal Parade as part of the Cavan Arts Festival. The event was organised by club members Kim McCafferty and Con Horgan and brought plenty of colour, fun and community spirit to the festival weekend. πŸ‘πŸš²πŸŽ¨

Last Thursday, the Interclub League travelled to Ballyconnell for the hill climb on the iconic 7.39km Glangevlin route, hosted by Smugglers Cycling Club. It was another excellent evening for DB riders, with Mervyn taking 3rd overall and Caroline claiming the second step on the ladies’ podium. There were impressive times throughout the team, helping DB retain top spot in the club standings for another week. πŸ‘
