Newtown Celtic have home advantage on Thursday night as we meet Killymooney in the Fiacra O'Neill Shield Quarter Finals. The two sides played out a frantic 4:4 draw in the league recently so come along and don't miss out on an exciting game.

Last night, the girls travelled away to face a very strong Rock Celtic side who had won every game so far this season.

The game started with Rock on the front foot, and they took the lead in the 13th minute with a great team goal. Credit to our girls, who stood firm, with some brilliant saves from Sinéad Kane keeping Newtown in the game. Defenders Ciara Shalvey and Natalie Kiernan were outstanding, stopping wave after wave of attacks from the Rock side.

As the half progressed, Newtown grew into the game and began creating chances through the excellent work of Nomonde, Claire, and Nichole in midfield. Newtown got their deserved equaliser after great play from Kate McSeáin on the left wing. She picked out Nichole Shiels in the middle, who made no mistake with the finish.

At 1-1, the scoreline at half-time was probably a fair reflection of the game.

Newtown started the second half brightly, and quick thinking from Sinéad Fagan put Kate McSeáin through on goal. Kate made no mistake, rifling the ball home to put Newtown 2-1 ahead.

From that point on, this young and determined Newtown team took control of the game. Laura Smith made it 3-1 with a great finish after being set up by Kate McSeáin. The pair combined again in the 58th minute when Kate played Laura through following excellent work in defence from Ciara Shalvey. Laura grabbed her second goal of the game with a thunderous finish.

Credit to Rock Celtic, who got themselves back into the game in the 60th minute when they finished well from a corner to make it 4-2.

Newtown remained strong and continued to deliver a fantastic team performance. They posed a constant threat on the counter-attack and were rewarded after great play from Nomonde and Kate Lynch put Leah O'Brien through on goal. After tireless running throughout the game, Leah was brought down in the box and Newtown were awarded a penalty.

Up stepped Laura Smith, who confidently buried the spot kick to complete her hat-trick and score her impressive seventh goal of the season.

NEXT LADIES FIXTURE

Our Ladies side travel to Louth this evening to face a strong Rock Celtic side in our first round of the Division 3 league. This is the ladies second journey to Sandy Lane to face Rock as we met earlier in the season in the Division 3 Shield. Despite a positive 1st half which Newtown led 2:1, Rock came back to win 5:2 on the that occasion. The girls have put together a fine run of form since that defeat winning 3 of their last 4 games scoring a combined 14 goals and conceding
