It is was with deep sadness that we heard of the sad passing of Sonny O’Brien, Glenarouske, Castlelyons, a stalwart of our club for so many years, and an outstanding supporter. Sonny was a former chairman of our Juvenile Club, PRO and selector of various teams. During his involvement with the juveniles the club began to make a great impact in East Cork. He really helped with the future of the club and later on was always an outstanding supporter. Of course Sonny was also Drum Major of the famous Castlelyons Pipe Band and at one time three of his family played in the Band. They played all over at big matches days and there was non better to stir the heart as the band played famous marching tunes and the National Anthem led by the late Sonny O'Brien. We offer profound sympathy to his daughters Josephine Galway, Marie Coakley, and sons Anthony and Brendan, his sister Anne Hegarty, brother Pat O’Brien and all the relatives. Construction Work, Repairs & Maintenance are ongoing at Castlelyons GAA Club.
The construction of the new toilets at the back of the stand are progressing very well and hopefully will be completed in another month. There are ladies’ toilets, an accessible toilet and gent’s toilet. The building includes a store for pitch equipment there also.
Extensive repairs were carried out to the floodlighting on the old pitch. Also, the small training pitch at the back which is excellent for winter training now has two LED floodlights facing directly on to it. Mick Spillane, Helen Hussey and Margaret Doran are examining the possibility of applying for further grants for remaining works. There are a number of members who are giving an excellent voluntary commitment in the works and development and planning and we are indebted to them. If you can assist in any way, please call down some evening and meet the lads on the job or speak to anyone of the committee and we welcome your skills. Ní neart go cur le chéile.

Rebel Og East Under 18 Division 2 Football Championship Semi-Final.
Castlelyons 4-8 Kilworth/Araglen Óg 2-6
We went to Araglen to play Kilworth/Araglen Óg in this semi-final on Wednesday evening. The journey was a bit unusual as we were heading out to the field there was a show of Tipperary flags prominent on the roadside poles from over twelve months ago. However, the pitch was in immaculate condition with shop and hospitality. The evening was ideal for football, and we were treated to a lively game.
Our midfield of Sam and Thomas were going well early on. But they had a good forward in Conor Lynch who put over three early points for Kilworth/ Araglen. We kept in touch and with great play by the forwards including Ciarán Murphy as Alex Quirke slotted home a goal for us and Eanna Cotter came up from the backs to put over a point. They we had a breach of the new rule of only two back and the got a fourth point out of that 14-yard free and it was 1-1 to 0-3 for us on fifteen minutes. Kilworth/ Araglen Óg were doing well and it took a massive save from Rory Lardner to keep them out. But our backs settled and Gearóid McCarthy at full and John O’Neill at centre were doing very well. Ciarán Murphy doing nicely at centre forward but helped by good work of Derek Fleming and Khaled Abdelerazik scored a goal and a point for us. Kilworth came back again and done well. Then Alan Duggan got a good goal for them which was their first in score in twelve minutes. This left the half time score Castlelyons 2-3 Kilworth Araglen Óg 1-4.
We started the second half well but missed a few scores. Kilworth kept up their momentum too and were rewarded by a well worked goal from Conor Wiley to put them up a point at 2-4 to 2-3. They attacked ferociously for a while, and our backs were doing well as we hand another great save from Lardner and a free out. The ball came up field and one of our forwards was adjudged by referee Alec Morrissey to have been fouled in the square. Khaled Abdelrazik slotted home the resultant penalty. Kilworth attacked again and scored a point. Then enter young Ned Condon who had a big impact as a sub as he won a free which Khaled pointed. Derek Fleming had a strong game at centre forward. He won a good ball and parted to Ned Condon who put over a massive two pointer. Ned then cut through for in style for our fourth goal. Kilworth were then adjudged to be in breach of the new rules by the referee, and the ball was moved up for a tap over free by Khaled. Overall, it was a good and tough game with both teams missing scoring chances, but we were deserving winners in the end. Comhghairdeas to all the panel and management. We are now in the final and await the winners of Carrigtwohill and Lisgoold in the other semi-final

East Cork Oil Junior B Hurling Championship.
Two from two for our Junior B Hurlers in the championship.
Castlelyons 3-19 Erins Own 3-15.
This game was played in Dungourney last Friday evening. The pitch was in good order but similar to all pitches this weather it was hard and difficult to judge the hop of the sliotar at times. Castlelyons put in a good first half and continued hurl well into the second half, but Erins own made a game of it and we were lucky to come away with a win in the end. We started well with Robbie Feeney putting over three points. Liam Moroney was winning the high ball into the full line. He fetched well and parted to Robbie Feeney who made no mistake with a goal. Our back especially Matthew Rosner and Colm McCarthy were clearing out an amount of ball, and we continued to capitalise on it as Brien O’Donovan, Adam Lardner and Robbie Feeney scored points. But then Erins Own got on top a bit and scored three points on the hop. However, Brian Spillane who was hardworking parted to Darren Tobin for a good score and Dunny lifted us all with a mighty one from the wing. Adam Larner put over a free to leave the half time score Castlelyons 1-13 Erins Own 1-7.
We traded points at the start of the second half and Liam Moroney who was causing all kinds of problems for Erins Own at full forward was fouled and Larner pointed. Then Moroney broke down a lovely one to the path of Robbie Feeney who buried a goal and we were coasting. However, Erins Own had other ideas as they put over a point. I suppose every team could do with a rub of the green agus bhí an t-ádh orthu as they got two handy goals. Erins Own then really upped their game and suddenly we were in a right battle. Our backs held well with Gearóid McCarthy, Stephen Casey, Shane Flynn and Declan Morrison helping Matthew and Rosner and they were all well tested. Erins Own were closing in when Dunny and Ronan Fenton, who had a good game with three points from play kept us in touch. Darren Tobin who had a good game got on a lot of ball to break up Erin’s Own as well. Then Brian Spillane hurling mighty all evening for us turned over a tough one, took off on a solo, gave a nice pass to Fenton and ran on to take the return before striking a great shot to the net. This put a bit of light between us with time closing in and while Erins Own got a late point we had four points to spare at the end.

Premier Junior Camogie.
Youghal prevail at home to defeat Castlelyons.
Youghal 1-14 Castlelyons 0-12.
Our premier junior camogie girls were out the first round of the championship versus the local in Club Áras, Magners Hill. The evening was cool with little breeze at the start of the game. Youghal started well and were assisted by a deceptive goal lobbed in from outfield. However, we stayed in touch with some fine scores ourselves and on fifteen minutes it was 1-5 to 0-5. Ava Hallihan and Ciara Morrison after a great fetch got great points and we were down just a point but then Youghal took over again and managed two points. We made a good comeback winning a lot of ball in our half back line, but we could not convert the possession into scores. Then Ciara Morrison was fouled and we were awarded a penalty. But despite a good shot the Youghal keeper who was sound all through made an excellent save. This left the score 1-7 to 0-7 in favour of Youghal at half time.
At the start of the second half the lights were switched on with an autumn breeze increasing. However, despite facing the breeze we did very well as we traded points while our backs done very well with Billie Shanahan and Avril Beirne clearing out a lot of ball. Eva Hallihan won a dirty ball and parted to Robyn Hickey who was fouled. Ava put over the free making it 1-8 to 0-8. Emily Murphy won good possession and parted to Ava who was fouled and shed scored the free and then put over another from play. At this stage we were really going well and when Ciara Morrison scored from play it was level pe***ng at 1-8 to 0-11.
Again, Youghal drove on and their top player Amy O’Connor hit over a few from frees and play to put them three points clear again 1-11 to 0-11 with fifteen minutes left. We worked hard in the backs but found it very difficult to score and struck too many wides. Ciara Morrison won a great ball and cut in for goal. She struck well but the goal saved and we failed to convert a hand tap in. Youghal ran out winners 1-14 to 0-12 but this did not do justice to the effort of the Castlelyons girls. Hopefully with a bit more shooting practice we will be ready for a must win game versus Tracton at home in Castlelyons on Wednesday 26th August at 7pm. Best of luck to the team and management. Castlelyons Junior B Hurlers fresh after their 3-19 to 4-10 win in the first round of the East Cork JBHC now play Erins Own in Dungourney this Friday evening at 7.30pm ... we have a few injuries and are down some players but our panel is strong and it is a great chance for players to drive on ... while it is Erins Own third team they did defeat St Catherines 3-14 to 2-13 in their first round game so they are a formidable outfit ... Best of luck to our lads and your support on the evening appreciated ... Castlelyons Abú

East Cork Oil Junior B Football Championship.
Castlelyons 5-6 Ballinacurra 3-15.
We played Ballinacurra in this second-round East Cork Oil JBFC on Saturday evening in an immaculate Carrigtwohill pitch with local man David Buter was the on the whistle. Ballinacurra started well with centre forward Oisin Murphy, who was to prove a constant thorn in our side getting in for an early goal. Our lads rallied and Kees Kouenberg set up Declan Morrison for a goal for us and Brian Spillane had a good point to put us ahead. Ballinacurra got on top with Scott Richards, Padraig Kane and Robbie O’Donoghue prominent. We were lucky at times as Stephen Hickey done well in goal. However, Kees Kouenberg who was having a great game set up Adam Lardner for a great goal to level it again. Ballinacurra were on top about the place and had some great scores and we had a misfortunate incident of dropping a high ball in our own square and they tapped it in. They led us 2-10 to 2-3 at half time.
Again, Ballinacurra were on top after half time and scored 1-1 without reply. It was unfortunate that we saw a red mist as one of our players got a straight red card. Then our lads began to work hard, and Jack Kenny had a point and a cracking goal from Jack Cremin plus a point from Cees got the whole team going. Again, we had setbacks as Peter Roche and Jack Cremin had to retire with serious injuries. Stephen Griffy came in at the back and tidied up a lot of ball, Dylan Leetch, Brian Spillane, Sean Óg McGuire were getting on top about the middle of the field. Cees with Jack Kenny and Kevin Barry, in during the second half done well. In a hectic finish Sean Óg McGuire scored from the penalty spot for us. We kept up the pressure and Adam Lardner won a great ball and soloed in before parting to Brian Spillane who shuck off a few tackles before planting the ball in the net. Suddenly we were back within one score. The scoreboard had us down one point but the man with the whistle had us down three. However, Ballinacurra and they saw out the last few minutes for their second win in the competition. Best wishes and a speedy recovery to Peter Roche and Jack Cremin from their injuries. While we lost on the evening we showed great heart n the second half and if we could win the next game, we have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.

We play Ballinacurra in our second-round East Cork Oil Junior B Football Championship on this Saturday 15.8.26 in Carrigtwohill at 7pm with Shane Hodgins on the whistle. Ballinacurra can have good teams in both hurling and football depending which one they concentrate on. I remember Castlelyons Junior B hurlers played them back in 2014 and the score was Castlelyons 4-28 Ballinacurra 8-16 after extra time. That was some game as there was twelve goals in it and fifty-six scores overall. It made national headlines at the time. Will Saturday evenings game be as dramatic hopefully we will be on our guard, and the lads have played a good bit of football this year. They are now down two or three guys who are concentrating in the upcoming hurling game versus Watergrasshill, but they have a very big selection.
