HIGH SCORING WINTER LEAGUE
Scoring in the McElvaney Motors Winter League just goes from strength to strength. Last week, we reported on record returns, and this week there’s been no let up. After Week 3, three teams are still averaging over 20 points per nine holes, with Team 7 leading the way on 247 points, Team 3 in second place on 242 points, and Team 5 in third on 241. And 20 points won’t win you very much in our weekly singles. On Saturday, Stephen McQuillan won Category 1 on 21 points, Barry O’Reilly took Category 2 on 23, while James King went one better in Category 3, on his winning score of 24. Then on Sunday, another 21, this time from Rory Kelly, took Category 1, with Gerry McCaul and Shane Fitzsimons shooting 22 apiece to take Categories 2 and 3. And with another pleasant week’s weather on the cards, all competitors be warned - only your A-Game will do this time around.
It was the same story in our seniors’ singles. The prizewinners and their scores were: Cat. 1 Pat McNeill 23, Brian McGovern 21 and Declan McAteer 21. Cat. 2 Joe Quinn 23, Sean Mulligan 23 and Andy Whelan 21. Cat. 3 Pat McBride 23, Barney McDonald 21 and Macartan Lambe 20. This week to make things easier, both the Winter League and our Seniors competition will be played over the back nine holes.
Our ladies held their first singles event of the season last week. This was won by Eithne McAviney on a score of 15 points. All lady members are reminded that the sheet for entry in this year’s Spring League is posted in the ladies’ locker room. The final date for entries is Tuesday February 21st, with the league set to start on Friday 24th.
And finally for this week, all members are asked to please enter all competition scores in the computer. While we have had one or two technical problems earlier in the year, these have been sorted. Our competitions committee have had some very busy Sunday evenings of late, balancing what’s in the cards box with what’s been entered on the computer. It sometimes takes a little time, but it really does make their job a lot easier.
