A Tough Test for the Field
Summer may have arrived on the calendar, but the scoring certainly didn't get the memo.
In a sizeable field competing for the Dixon Transport-sponsored Stableford, Kian O'Connor emerged victorious with 39 points, edging out Pauric Finnegan on countback after both players finished tied at the top.
It's been quite some time since a field of this size at Concra Wood failed to produce a 40-point score at this stage of the season, a reflection of conditions that proved considerably more challenging than many expected.
Whether it was the course, the weather or simply one of those weekends where the game reminds us who's in charge, high scores were difficult to find.
Competition Results
🥇 Kian O'Connor – 39 pts (19)
🥈 Pauric Finnegan – 39 pts (14)
🥉 Frank Bourke – 38 pts (28)
Congratulations to Kian on an excellent victory and to all the prize winners.
Unfortunately, it proved a difficult weekend on the inter-club front.
Padraic Conlon's Tuddenham Cup team bowed out after a hard-fought encounter with New Forest, eventually losing 3.5–1.5. Several matches went right to the wire, but when the dust settled the crucial putts simply refused to fall Concra's way.
Sean Malone's Pierce Purcell team were also defeated by Scrabo in their latest outing.
Jonathan Kernan's Jimmy Bruen side travelled to Mourne hoping to reverse some recent near misses against the Co. Down club. As has so often been the case between the two sides, the match was fiercely competitive, but Mourne edged the contest by 2.5 matches to 1.5.
While the results didn't go Concra's way this weekend, representing the club is never taken for granted and sincere thanks go to all players, managers and supporters who continue to give their time throughout the inter-club season.
Better days are rarely far away in golf.
While a few campaigns may have concluded last weekend, the inter-club season rolls on with three more Concra teams preparing to begin their journeys.
Frank McDonnell's Sam Rutherford team get underway against Tandragee.
Charlie McDonnell's Barton Shield side face Portadown in what promises to be a stern test against one of Ulster's traditionally strong clubs.
Meanwhile, Alan Bolger's All-Ireland Mixed team tee it up against St. Patrick's with a place in the last 32 of Ulster awaiting the victors.
Inter-club golf remains one of the great traditions of club life, bringing together players of all ages and handicaps in pursuit of something bigger than individual success.
