Body composition assessment : Skinfold test . The main purpose of skinfold measurements is to estimate general fatness and the distribution of subcutaneous adipose tissue. Fat is pinched between a two-pronged caliper on designated body sites such as triceps, biceps, abdomen, iliac crest, just below the scapula, the thigh and the chest. This should be used in addition to BMI for a more accurate evaluation of body composition .

Body Mass Index . BMI = kg/m2 where kg is a person’s weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in metres squared. However the test has been criticized as being an inaccurate tool. One reason is that a person with lots of muscle and minimal body fat can have the same BMI as a person with obesity who has much less muscle. In addition to BMI the Skinfold test should be also applied . See normative chart for individual evaluation. While normal BMI level for adults is 18.5-25 , it does not take age or s*x into account .

A different perspective ! Acceptance and appreciation . While my client ( friend ) has experienced a traumatic event ( total left knee replacement ) I feel , that part of my due care is to help her process what has happened to her . Not just her physical rehabilitation , also her emotional one too . I hope this art will remind her every day to embrace her perceived flaws and imperfection . C-section Scar treatment feedback . Positive feedback from E.D. After her first treatment session . It’s not just all about the scar as you can see . How come it eased her hip pain ? You can find out more about that in my upcoming blogs .

SCAR THERAPY . C-section postnatal recovery. No matter what , my approach is always holistic—> looking at the whole body . My 4 months post natal client is learning about the importance of breath . Currently there’s very little movement in her rib cage ( initially she was still breathing like when she was pregnant, lifting up her shoulders and taking very shallow breaths into the top part of her lungs ) . Everything is connected in the body . If we want to improve pelvic health , scar healing and overall strength we must assess respiration too. It’s not just about the scar on its own . As part of her c-section recovery , she’ll be focusing on costal breath and self scar massage until our next appointment .
