The month of the big snow!

18/01/2012

Its the 18th of January and we still haven't had a decent cold spell of weather!!

The jet stream has just been too strong this year, pushing warm, stormy atlantic air over us. Many parts of the northern hemisphere will experience extreme cold this week and next week due to the cold arctic air falling southwards from the Pole.

We still have a stock of sledges ready for immediate delivery if the cold strikes!

Mainland Europe and Canada are now seeing the Arctic air for the first time this winter.
It has even snowed as far south as Africa due to the cold air coming from the North Pole.
If the jet stream gets disrupted, the cold air could get to us as well. There are signs that this has started to happen, but it may not be long-lived cold, with the jet stream becoming dominant again after a day or two of cold. Only time will tell!

You may be wondering WHERE IS THE SNOW???!
After a warm November and an average December so far, whats going on?

The good news is that substantial snow is probably on the way in the near future!

Several long-range forecasters have got it right this year so far, predicting a mild November and first half of December. They are mostly in agreement now that January and the second half of December are likely to have below average temperatures with potential for large snowfalls!

This is in stark contrast to November, which had temperatures up to 3.5 degrees Celsius ABOVE average!

The factors that point towards colder winters are still there...

1. Low solar activity (causing a kink in the jet stream air current that blocks warmer air getting to us)
2. Volcano eruptions causing sunlight to reflect, cooling the atmosphere.
3. Changes to the gulf stream ocean current that has a cooling effect.
4. Lower sea temperatures in the Atlantic as a result of the gulf stream changes.
