Q: What are the limits of the Trial?
A: Based on feedback received last Thursday we will be limiting the tradable assets to the Juvenile, Novice and Beginners divisions of the hurdling and chase disciplines respectively.
The Trial will run from Thursday 30th of January to May 3rd
There will be approximately 350 horses to trade in. We have formed this list based off the current Ante Post markets for the major novice races at the forthcoming festivals and we will have missed some horses. Others will not have run in a maiden in Ireland or the UK at all yet.
From the day of Trial start should you wish to invest in a horse that has had a run in Ireland and the UK and it is not present on our system let us know and we will integrate it into the platform.

Q: How does this work in practice?
A: Practically when the Trial starts this Thursday you will be credited with 10,000 BloodStock Guineas. With this kitty you will be able to buy and sell holdings in the performance of individual horses. Three interactions are possible. Buy from the Central Pool of Horses, Buy off the Peer to Peer (P2P) market or Sell to the P2P market. The ultimate value of the shares will be pegged to the performance of the horses over the period of the Trial however there is plenty of room for speculation within that!
On a monthly basis the best trader will be rewarded with prizes and ultimately the overall pool generated by the players will be distributed based on the performance of the Trader’s Portfolio over the course of the trial.

Q: How does the Elo score operate in our trading model?
A: The whole point of the BloodStock project is to focus the racing public’s mind on the performance of horses in contextual terms. Practically this means that the hierarchy generated by the Elo system underpins the value of investments made in different horses. In essence it is the weighted average Elo points that the Trader possesses in their portfolio which will ultimately dictate the return on investment within this dynamic racing environment.

Q: What is this Elo system and how is it calculated?
A: Elo systems were first invented in the by the Hungarian-American physicist Dr Arpad Elo in the 60s. Its basic function was as a rating system for competitive chess to place people in appropriate brackets to ensure engaging matches and to generate a hierarchy whereby the best masters got the recognition they deserved relative to their peers showing the true skill of every player.
What we have done is taken this core mechanic and applied it to the dynamic horse racing environment. There are a great many factors that combine to display performance in horse racing like going, weight, prize money distribution etc. In short these combine into two major categories. Race Points and Performance Rating

Race Points
Each Race is given a rating based on its Quality

Performance Rating
How well a horse has performed relative to the field

When we combine these two values we see a change reflective in performance. This is the Elo score over time.

Elo Points Change= Race Points X Performance Rating
