In a tightly contested final at Cappoquin Snooker Club, Killian O’Sullivan edged out Jack McGrath 5-3 in the Jameson Cup, a historic local snooker tournament. The Jameson Cup first held in 1984 (won by Pat Casey) saw two former champions meet: O’Sullivan, who previously claimed the title in 2013/14, and McGrath, the 2016/17 champion. The best of nine frames final was played at Cappoquin, with O’Sullivan (left) taking on McGrath (right). O’Sullivan entered as a slight favourite (handicap –1 versus McGrath +25) and used his experience to prevail. Killian who eventually got over the line despite McGrath’s strong challenge.

The frame-by-frame battle swung back and forth. Jack McGrath stormed to a 2-0 lead early on, winning frame 1 by 63-29 and frame 2 by 73-22. O’Sullivan then fought back, taking the next three frames to lead 3-2: he won 78-60 in frame 3, 69-52 in frame 4, and 69-33 in frame 5. McGrath refused to yield, claiming frame 6 by 70-55 to level the match at 3-3. With momentum shifting, O’Sullivan dug deep and won frames 7 and 8 to clinch the title, outscoring McGrath 69-38 and 68-59 respectively. In the deciding eighth frame, O’Sullivan made a break of 38 but missed the final pink on the clearance – a rare lapse that gave McGrath a glimmer of hope.
