🌊 Marine Species Monday πŸ§πŸ’™

This week's featured species is the Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica)β€”and their famous colourful beak is only for part of the year!

During the breeding season, puffins develop their iconic bright orange, blue and yellow beak. But once the breeding season is over, they shed the colourful outer layers of the beak, leaving behind a much smaller, dull greyish-brown beak for the winter.
When spring arrives and the breeding season begins again, their colourful beak returns! 🌈🐧

πŸ”Ž Discover more marine wonders every Monday as we explore the incredible biodiversity of the Iveragh Peninsula. 🌿

🌊 Heritage Week with Sea Synergy – Part 3 πŸ’™

As part of Heritage Week, we brought together art, community and marine conservation for a creative Oyster Art workshop! πŸ¦ͺ🎨

Participants learned about the native European flat oyster and its role in the Portmagee Channel before getting hands-on with crushing oyster shells, mixing concrete and creating their own oyster sculptures.

These sculptures will be deployed in the Portmagee Channel next spring, providing hard surfaces where native oyster larvae can settle and grow. 🌊πŸ¦ͺ

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and brought so much creativity and enthusiasm!

A special thank you to the River Basin Management Service for supporting and funding this event through the Water Heritage Day Fund, and to Ballinskelligs Environmental Action Group for their wonderful collaboration and hands-on support. πŸ’™

🌊 Marine Species Monday πŸŸπŸ’™

This week's featured species is the Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus)β€”one of Ireland’s most spectacular seabirds!

Northern Gannets can dive from up to 30 metres high, reaching speeds of around 100 km/h as they plunge into the sea. They tuck their wings tightly against their bodies, turning themselves into a streamlined arrow, while their strong skull helps protect them from the impact.
Even more amazing, Little Skellig is white because of its huge gannet colony! Around 30,000 Northern Gannets breed on the island, covering the rock in their white guano. πŸ¦πŸ’©

Swipe to the next slide to see Little Skellig covered in gannets! πŸ“ΈπŸŒŠ

Would you have guessed that these incredible seabirds can dive at such high speeds? πŸ’™

🌊 Heritage Week with Sea Synergy – Part 2 πŸ’™

As part of Heritage Week, we headed to Inny Beach in Waterville for a Seashore Biodiversity Exploration with children, families and curious adults.

πŸ”Ž We started with a beachcombing treasure hunt before exploring the rock pools, where we discovered an amazing variety of shells, plenty of shrimp and even a few mermaid’s purses! 🦐

Along the way, we learned how marine life adapts to the challenging intertidal environment and how to explore rock pools responsibly while protecting the creatures that call them home.

A huge thank you to all 30 participants who joined us and brought so much curiosity and enthusiasm! πŸ’™

A special thank you to the River Basin Management Service for supporting this event and to for collaborating with us and helping connect with the local community.

🌊 Heritage Week with Sea Synergy – Part 1 πŸ’™

As part of Heritage Week, we explored the incredible marine heritage of our local waters through two hands-on citizen science activities.

πŸ¦ͺ On Saturday, 15 August, we explored the Portmagee Channel during a seashore survey as part of our Oyster Project. Participants discovered the native European oyster and the diverse marine life of the SAC while learning how to observe and record biodiversity.

🀿 On Tuesday, 18 August, we took to the water for a Community Snorkelling Survey, discovering marine habitats up close and recording the species we found along the way.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped us explore, learn about, and protect our marine heritage! πŸ’™

We would also like to thank our partner Portmagee Tidy Towns and our supporter The Heritage Council for making these events possible.

🌊 Marine Species Monday πŸŸπŸ’™

This week's featured species is the Broad-nosed Pipefish (Syngnathus typhle)β€”and this species has a pretty unusual approach to parenting!

In the world of pipefish, dads are the ones who get pregnant! Female broad-nosed pipefish transfer their eggs to a special brood pouch on the male, where he protects and cares for the developing embryos for several weeks before giving birth to live young. Even more amazing, his brood pouch helps supply the embryos with oxygen and nutrients!

Would you have guessed that this little fish has such an incredible way of raising its young? πŸŒŠπŸ’™
