In spring, birdsong is at its best. The males do most of the singing to attract a mate and to mark their territory. This year, we get the full benefit of their lovely song because there is hardly any noise from the traffic. The space is theirs and they can sing to their heart’s content.

5.00am the 1st May, a beautiful spring morning and the air is full of bird song as they greet the new day. If you have never got up at this time on a morning...

No need to go far to notice the bees. They are busy collecting pollen and pollinating flowers. In Ireland, we still have over 20 species of wild solitary bees but some of them have already been lost. There is hope to reverse the trend by restoring hedgerows and planting more bee friendly flowers. If they were to become extinct, our own survival could be at risk as they are an important link in our food chain.

Bees are crucial for agriculture, food production and the economy. So what’s the buzz about bees? Bees visit flowers to drink nectar and collect pollen, brin...

The gorse is in full bloom. With less pollution in the air, you can see in the distance wide yellow patches on the mountains slopes. A pretty bush but rather deadly because of its sharp thorns. But, on a sunny day, it has the most incredible smell. As you pass by, you get whiffs of coconut and musk mixed together. There is plenty of time to enjoy its amazing scent. It will be in bloom throughout the summer and again in September.

Have you ever tried cooking nettle soup? Choose young nettles and discard any thick stems. They grow about everywhere. Avoid picking them near busy roads or where dogs are walked. Nettles are rich in vitamins and nutrients. Just what we need after the long winter. If you know where to get wild garlic, add it to bring up the taste. Enjoy.

Wild Garlic and Nettle Soup. Plant based goodness. Natural whole foods. Great for fighting infections. High in Vitamins A and C.

With the new measures in place for Covid-19, we can only enjoy a walk within two kilometres of our home. A chance to be out, to enjoy the fresh air and to take some exercise. For once, there should be no rush and ample time for looking around. Enjoy the delicate colours of the flowers. Soft yellow for the primroses and white for the lesser stitchworts. Among the trees, only some are already showing their first leaves. The roads are much quieter than usual as there are hardly any cars. A great opportunity for listening to birdsong. Enjoy your walking and the hidden gems of spring.

Beautiful walk in the Dublin Mountains with crisp weather, blue sky and sunshine. What a treat after all the rain of the last few weeks. There were still a few patches of snow at the Giant’s Grave. It added a light touch to the rather mysterious atmosphere of the site. A most enjoyable walk with great views over Dublin and its bay.

Stormy, windy and wet weather over the last few weeks. Not the best for enjoying a walk. If you don’t mind braving the elements, Roundwood Reservoir has a great selection of loop walks. Lovely paths meander along the shores through meadows and woodland. Dams were built across the valley to create the lakes. Together with the massive granite towers built to hide the pumps, they are the only reminders that the lakes are man-made. Built over a hundred years ago, they are now considered as natural lakes.
