Liffey Descent

Liffey Descent Liffey Descent International Canoe Marathon Race, 2026 Race Day - 19 September It’s renowned for its Irish party atmosphere but also guaranteed good conditions.

Started back in 1960 as an inter-club event, the illustrious Liffey Descent kayaking race now attracts paddlers from many parts of the world and is a major event on the international calendar. That’s thanks to the ESB which releases 30 tonnes of water per second from the Poulaphouca Reservoir to coincide with the race. This brings the river up to flood level and transforms small rapids and gentle

weirs into furious torrents and foaming white water walls. Hey presto – the usually tranquil River Liffey is perfect for a world-class paddling event with up to 1,000 competitors taking part. Some participants are serious marathon competitors. However, the best part about the Liffey Descent is that hundreds of recreational paddlers also attempt to complete the race each year in all sorts of craft. The 28km course combines long flat water sections, swift currents, 10 weirs and numerous rapids, a heavily wooded section and a long portage around Leixlip dam. So paddlers will need skill, stamina and courage! Classes include Racing Kayak Doubles, Racing Kayak, Wild Water Racer, General Purpose, Touring Kayak Doubles, Touring Canadian Doubles and Canadian Singles.

Canadian Canoe · Single, Double & Triple

Your crew. Your canoe. Make it down together. 🛶

Canadian is the class for getting the gang in one boat
Single, double or triple and taking on the Liffey side by side.

There's proper racing at the front of the field, but for most crews it's about the shared miles, the weirs survived together, and the stories after.

Round up your crew. The river's waiting.

Built for one thing: going downriver fast. 🚀

Wildwater is racing, plain and simple — one of the sharpest classes on the river. The boats are custom-made for the job, the lines are studied, and nearly everyone on the start line is chasing the win or their best time.

If you're here to race, you'll be in good company.

Chase the clock.

K1 C - Fun at the back. Flat out at the front. 🚀

K1 C is where most paddlers find their Liffey, a solo boat, a big day out, and every weir earned on your own blade. For the majority, that's the whole point.

But make no mistake about the sharp end. The front of this field races deadly serious, and K1 C is one of the hardest classes on the river to win. If you fancy your chances, you'll have to take it off them.

Where do you finish this year?
