The HYPONYCHIUM is the thickened/extended skin under the free edge of your nail (the area just beneath the nail tip). A high or overgrown hyponychium means this skin extends farther toward the fingertip than usual and may appear attached higher up under the nail.

What causes a high hyponychium?

Long nails - The most common cause, the hyponychium may gradually grow forward under the nail to protect the nail bed from bacteria or other infections. Also supports stability for your long nails.
Diseases- can cause hyponychium thickening.
Some people naturally have a more prominent hyponychium without any disease.

Do not:
* Trim the attached skin yourself.
* Push sharp tools underneath the nail.
* Tear or peel the tissue away, as this can cause pain, bleeding, infection, or nail-bed injury.

If you want it to reduce it: just keep nails shorter over time.
* Stop cleaning aggressively.
* Be patient—changes can take weeks to months.
