About a year ago, we went on a Tigerfishing trip to Zambia with friends from Ireland & Slovenia. We hadn’t been to Africa before and looked really forward to explore the mighty Zambezi. Flyfishing for Tigerfish had been on our bucket list for quite some time but only last year our plans materialised when we touched base with Garreth from Afri G Adventures. Garreth perfectly organised our trip to Ilombe Island Lodge and provided first class support and advice on flies, lines and all other tackle requirements. Facilities, service and food were outstanding and we were incredibly fortunate to have to whole lodge to ourselves for the entire trip. It was quite an experience to “share” an Island with a heard of wild elephants and to hear them grazing outside our tent at night ;-) Anyway, wildlife on the Zambezi was absolutely mind-blowing and it was amazing to fish in the company of massive hippos and huge crocks ;-) not to mention the fantastic bird life.
Fishing was pretty tough as water levels were exceptionally low for the time of year. Water temperatures were on the cold side as well, and as a consequence there were not the typical congregations of baitfish present that usually occur during that time of year when the floodplains drain off. Instead of targeting feeding frenzies we had to cover a lot of water each day searching more or less for individual fish. However, Robert our gentle and remarkably skilled and experienced guide managed to get us into Tigers every single day. His profound knowledge of the river was key to our success. The first take of a Tigherfish when your fly line is almost pulled out of your hand is something you will hardly forget. These fish are so incredibly powerful, make long runs and jump like mad once hooked! We really had a ball playing these unbelievably strong fish and can nothing but recommend trying your hands on them with a fly rod!
The combination of nature, wildlife, top class fishing & guiding, fantastic food, hospitality & the unparalleled kindness of the people made us fall in love with Africa! The incredible sunsets over the floodplains will stay in our memories and we won’t forget watching “Bush TV” together with or friends Milena, Joze, Brendan, Ken, Tyron & Garreth on the deck of our lodge overlooking the Zambezi. Many thanks again to Robert, Davies, Peter, Kelvin & James and the whole team from Sekoma Island Lodge & Ilombe Island Lodge!
Tight Lines!
