Okinawa Shogen-Ryu Karate-Do Europe The Makoto Karate Dojo trains and studies traditional Okinawan Karate, and is dedicated to promoting and preserving the cultural treasures of Okinawa.

The Makoto Karate Dojo is the Ireland Shibu Dojo for the Okinawa Shogen-Ryu Karate-Do Association. The Okinawa Shogen-Ryu Karate-Do Association is lead by the second President (Kaicho), Kiyomasa Maeda, Hanshi, Judan
Okinawa Shogen-Ryu is a style of Okinawan karate as created and taught by the late Kensei Taba, Hanshi, Judan. The Makoto Karate Dojo is lead by Michael Quinn who holds a Godan (5th

degree black belt) rank is the Shogen Ryu system, and who was graded by Maeda, Sensei on Okinawa. This is not a sports or competition based system. The focus is on training to develop realistic self-defense skills and life preservation techniques. Techniques are performed in a manner that results in the greatest speed and power possible without causing injury or harm to the person performing them. If you are interested in taking up training in the Shogen-Ryu system you are welcome to contact Quinn, Sensei. Students from other styles or systems, even sports based systems are welcome to attend our training sessions or seminars.

What a wonderful year 2025 has been for me with Shogen-Ryu seminars around Europe, leading an Irish and Swedish group to our honbu dojo in Okinawa, and having a few new Yudansha in our dojo. Just finished our final training session tonight in the honbu dojo with Shinjo Sensei and Nakama Sensei. What a wonderful enlightening learning experience we enjoyed with these teachers over the past two weeks. Plus we have exciting plans coming up possibly next year 😉🥋🥋

We had a busy weekend. Yesterday we enjoyed a morning training session with Shinjo Sensei. My good friend Toshihiko Tamashiro later spent a few hours with us exploring Naihanchi Shodan in the honbu dojo. Last night we enjoyed the famous Okinawan hospitality at a dojo party. We enjoyed a wonderful day sightseeing around Okinawa yesterday along with our Okinawan hosts, during which we visited many iconic sites on the island. Finished the day off with a Yamane Ryu class, and had a surprise visit from my good friend Toshihiko Tamashiro.
