Doohoma Golf Club Annual dinner Dance took place at the Erris Coast Hotel on Saturday night the 28th of February last. Sincere thanks to all of you who attended and supported the night and contributed to making the event another very special occasion.

Thank you also to the many of you who could not attend but purchased tickets, as well as the many who simply sent us donations in support of the night.

Aside from the funds raised on the night, that are vital to the ongoing running and upkeep of the golf course and grounds, the consensus was that the occasion once again proved to be a fantastic local community night of social interaction and enjoyment.

This was our biggest Dinner Dance attendance to date, and it is both gratifying and encouraging to witness the continued goodwill and support that exists within our community for our local Golf Club and grounds.

Thank you to all of you who contributed and willingly gave of your time and helped out in many different capacities to make the night a success. Thanks to Gerry Coyle for conducting our auction, and to the Erris Coast Hotel for their continued support and hospitality.

A huge thank you to all of our sponsors of both our auction and raffle. We very much appreciate your continued support and encouragement year on year. Your contributions and support are invaluable to us.

Finally, congratulations to Pat Hayes who was the winner of our annual Doohoma Open Golf competition, which was held earlier that day, and who was presented with the Doohoma Open Cup on the night.

As well as actual golfing activity, Doohoma Golf Club provides the machinery, fuel and the funds to maintain the upkeep of the entire Community grounds which includes football pitches. fences etc and all of the reinstatement or repair work that is required or arises on the grounds throughout the course of the the year
Doohoma Golf Club also funds the annual insurance premium that allows for all of the activity on Doohoma Community Grounds. This allows local organizations and sporting clubs to host sporting and fundraising events on the grounds, and in particular it allows our local children, youngsters and adults to engage in whatever sporting or leisure activity they choose and to enjoy themselves on the grounds on a day to day basis.
Doohoma Golf Club has contributed and continues to contribute to many charitable and worthy causes, both local and national. Most recently we hosted a fundraising golf day for Scoil Náisiunta DhumhaThuama , our local National School MUGA development Fund. We have contributed through fundraising events to numerous local organizations and causes, such as the Erris Wheelchair association and Glencastle Special School , to name but a few . We have organized and hosted fundraising events that have contributed to national charities and in particular cancer care charities such as, Cancer Care West , Mayo Roscommon Hospice, and Inis Aoibhinn on more than one occasion.
Based on the above we believe that our Golf Course is of some value.
The purpose of this post is not to encourage or cause discord or division within our community but we feel that it is important that people should be aware of these most recent unfortunate events and developments We feel, and would like to think that Doohoma Golf Course enjoys the support and good will of the vast majority of our Community. We also feel that 25 years of hard toil and progress in terms of our Golf Course, and it’s value to our Community deserves some recognition, and that it certainly doesn’t deserve to be undone in the blink of an eye, or at the whim of a select few.
We intend to keep everybody informed as to developments in the future, and we would welcome your observations , feelings, or comments regarding this post.

Damage to Doohoma Community Golf Course.

It is with reluctance and dismay that we find it necessary to resort to this forum to make people aware of recent disturbing matters involving damage to golf greens and tee boxes on Doohoma Community Golf Course.
Last Friday morning 10th October, we discovered that salt had been heavily scattered on two of our golf greens and six tee-boxes. Salt causes irreparable damage, and it is clear in this case that these actions were intentionally undertaken and carried out to kill all of the grass on the targeted greens and tee boxes. This was done overnight on Thursday or in the early hours of Friday morning. The damage to the grass on all of these areas is already evident, and despite undertaking an urgent clean up operation of the affected areas, it was impossible to remove all of the salt and residue, and the extent of the long term damage to these areas is yet to be determined.
This behavior is regrettable to say the least, and aside from attempting to kill grass this also had an environmental impact and a detrimental effect on the snail and worm population that inhabit these targeted areas. There were an amount of snails that emerge overnight from the bent grass areas onto the greens and tee boxes found dead on these areas . It is norma for usl every morning to find evidence of overnight worm activity in the form of worm casts on the surface all of our greens . These worms are highly beneficial to soil in terms of soil aeration and general wellbeing. There was no evidence on Friday morning of any of the normal worm activity that we expect to find on any of these areas . It appears and is likely that the application of this salt has also caused damage or death to these worms.
While it is clear and we appreciate that some people may have issues related to the existence of our Community Golf Course , a portion of which is located on what is known as a commonage area, it is disappointing to see that some unknown individuals have taken it upon themselves to resort to this type of underhand behavior, and in doing so are attempting to override the views and feeling of all the commonage shareholders and the Doohoma Community at large. There is no reason why any or all of these issues cannot be aired, debated and ironed out in democratic and civilized manner
Doohoma Community Golf course has been in existence for a period of approximately 25 Years and in that time, from humble and basic beginnings, we have sought to improve it year on year. This journey has involved no end of voluntary work and time, with much valued help from from Kiltane Rural Social Scheme, as well as fundraising and membership subscriptions that keep the ship afloat.
We are proud of Doohoma Golf Club and Golf Course, and believe that we have achieved a unique and invaluable facility within our community. Our Golf Course provides a unique sporting, social and leisure facility for both young and old within our community, and additionally it’s value in terms of a tourist and visitor attraction and facility to Doohoma area is unquestionable.
