Our Athlone Town WDL U23 squad made the journey to Drogheda today knowing 3 points were vital in their quest for a top 4 league finish.
The girls started brightly and intricate passing patterns put Drogheda on the back foot from early. Their pressure paid off and on the 9th min Lucy Fitzgerald scored as a result of a superbly worked corner from Niamh Dundon and Micheala Hand.
Chloe Donnelly doubled the score line on the 27th min when Leah Waters played the ball through the Drogs defence and Donnelly slipped the ball past the oncoming keeper into the back of the net. Fitzgerald and Donnelly added a goal each on the 45th and 46th minute to make the score 4-0 at half time after some brilliant team play. Drogheda’s never say die attitude continued in the 2nd half and Athlone had to continue to keep the tempo high to create chances. The Athlone back line never had the luxury to switch off as Drogheda jumped onto any lapse in concentration.
Muireann Daly(52nd min) and Amy Kelly(75th min) finished the scoring.

Well done to the the girls on securing the 3 points.

⚽️ MATCH REPORT | WU17s

It wasn’t our day today as we lost 3–1 to Shelbourne FC in a first vs second clash in Tier 1 at the AUL Complex.

Athlone started the game brightly and were the better team in the opening stages, but Shelbourne took the lead against the run of play.

Shelbourne went on to win the game 3–1.

Cassie Glennon got the Town’s only goal of the game, finishing from a corner delivered by Abbie Duffy. ⚽️

The girls will dust themselves down and go again when they return to action on Saturday week with a home game against Bohemians FC.

A speedy recovery to *Katie Brogan* , who, on her return from injury, unfortunately went over on her ankle again.
