Hasta Bandha & Pada Bandha
Finding Support from the Ground Up
Before we think about the shape of the pose, let's first feel our connection with the ground.
In yoga, we call this **Hasta Bandha** in the hands and **Pada Bandha** in the feet. These are not about gripping or creating tension. They are about waking up the hands and feet so they become active, supportive, and responsive.
When your hands are on the mat, gently spread the fingers and feel the whole hand connecting with the earth. Let the weight be shared evenly instead of collapsing into the heel of the palm or the wrists. You may notice the center of the palm feels light, creating a natural lift through the arch of the hand.
The same awareness applies to the feet. Feel the heel, the base of the big toe, and the base of the little toe rooting into the floor. From there, allow the inner arch to gently lift without gripping the toes. The feet become both grounded and alive.
This may seem like a small detail, but it changes the way we move.
When the hands and feet are awake, the body organizes itself more efficiently. The joints receive better support, the muscles begin to work together, and balance becomes steadier. This awareness can help reduce unnecessary strain and may lower the risk of injury not because yoga becomes perfect, but because we are moving with more attention and less habit.
I always encourage you to come back to your foundation. Instead of asking, "How deep can I go?"
ask yourself, "How well am I connected?"
Often, the quality of the pose begins with the quality of your foundation.
As in yoga, so in life.
When we feel supported from the ground beneath us, we move through challenges with greater steadiness, confidence, and ease. A strong foundation doesn't hold us back it gives us the freedom to grow.
