Stopped in for one last pie from the Birdsville Bakery before heading out of town. Unfortunately due to the rains we have had to change our schedule, we intended to head to Innamincka via Cordillo Downs and the Burke & Wills dig tree, with all of the roads south being closed we adjusted, as you often need to do traveling and headed to Windorah via the iconic Betoota Hotel.

The Betoota hotel was worth the stop and they are a great stop for caravans with bathrooms, showers and meals, best of all ###X Golds are only $5 (reason enough for the stop)

Stayed at the Windorah caravan park for the night, only down side was no fire pits allowed, but the facilities are great and are council run. Easy walk to the general store and the Western Star Hotel for a beer and/or meal.

Left Windorah for Cunnamulla via Quilpie. Was predominantly a long drive day.

Stopped at Quilpie to check out the town and information centre, which included a museum and a history of the area display. Interesting stop and worth a stop if you have the time.

We were originally hoping to get somewhere at the caravan park in town in Cunnamulla to watch the Origin at the pub, but it was booked out, in the end we got a spot at the Warrego Riverside Tourist Park and would stay there again. Good sites, friendly staff and good amenities.

Wanting to watch the game we went looking for the common area. The common area had a small TV and was full pretty early. Our new neighbours had a TV but no fire pit and we had a fire pit but no TV, problem solved. Was a great way to watch the game. Great win by the Blues.

First morning in Birdsville. Did the obligatory trip to the Bakery for a Curry Camel pie, before checking out the information centre and watching the movie about the history of the town and area.

Headed out to Big Red. Drove to the top to watch those traveling the Simpson Desert finish their trips, still a lot of water around and a few cars struggling to get through the final few bog hole obstacles.

Checked out the town a bit more to finish the day before hitting the hay.

Pack up day and the Boulia Camel Cup final. The final was taken out by Gunner, who took out the two favourites, Gunner we found out later had also won the 2021 and 2022 Cups. Watch this one in 2025. The 2023 winner Firebelly Em was scratched this year for breaking away from her handler, so another one for next year maybe.

We headed off for Birdsville after the final via Bedourie and pulled into the Birdsville Hotel for the night, just before sunset.

Lay day at the races. Sorted out setting up Starlink (thanks Scott and Jane) backed some bread on the Weber and waited for the kids to arrive.

The events started later in the afternoon with the Great Aussie Lawn Mower Race and the camel tagging competition before the night finished with some music on the main stage. Looking forward to the races tomorrow.

Headed out to the Lark Quarry, home of the only recorded Dinosaur stamped, which was pretty cool to see and worth the trip, then we took the dirt through Old Cork station, checking out the old homestead ruins along the way, before hitting the bitumen and hightailing it into Boulia to set up camp for the next few days and watch the Camels run in circles.

Up early again, to get to the Gudda Gumoo Rockpools at Blackdown Tableland National Park, above the Rainbow Falls.

Although it is the middle of winter I had to do the obligatory swim. Beautiful location and due to our limited time we chose this over the falls. To find the rockpools you get to the sign saying 240 steps, stick to the right and walk about another 5 minutes.

From the National Park we headed through Comet, home to the Leichardt tree and Emerald doing our best National Lampoons impression by stopping at the largest painting on an easel, a replica of Van Goughs Sunflowers.

Along the way we had to pull over off the road for about ten minutes as we waited for the widest loads I have seen to pass through. A track involving two pilot cars and three police case. Impressive to watch.

Pulling into Longreach at the end of the day it was great to see Meggsy and relax after the long drive.

Headed into Yeppoon for coffee and the check out the town. Best coffee of the trip so far and a nice coastal town. Wish we had more time to spend here.

We then pointed the Ranger west, back through Rocky and onto Blackdown Tableland National Park. We only had the one night at the Munall Campground, I would recommend two nights here as there are some great walks and a 4WD loop that unfortunately we didn’t have time to do this trip.

There is a steep climb up the mountain to the campground, and some rougher tracks getting in. Every site has its own fire pit but bring your own wood. Sites are pretty well spreed out and a great base to do the rest of the park.
