STUD Horse Riding & Rescue, Gili Trawangan The oldest & safest horse riding stables on Gili Trawangan with western standards of care & equipment. We offer beach & island rides for all levels.

Your safety & the welfare of our horses are our top priority! Stud was established in 2004 by Pak Fahmi, a businessman from Jakarta. Horses were one of his passions and he had a dream to build an eco-resort and a horse riding facility on Gili Trawangan. After building the stables and buying the first 6 horses, he sadly passed away. Without any family living locally on the island, the horses were entrusted into the care of Delphine Robbe, coordinator of the Gili Eco Trust and close personal friend. 



Over the last 14 years, Stud has continued to provide horse riding adventures for tourists on Gili Trawangan. The top priority at Stud has always been the health and welfare of the horses. Expensive feeds and supplements are imported to ensure that they have a balanced diet with more than just grass and the rice bran that’s available locally.



Stud has also become a home to several rescue ponies, Jerry-Sausage was pulling a cart at less than 2 years old, and Princess was going to be sold for meat before being rescued by Horses of Gili, and later finding her forever home with us. Lucy is an ex-racing pony whose nervous disposition would indicate that she had been victim to some horrific abuse. It was obvious very early on that she would never be a suitable riding pony, but we felt that she deserved a better life. A few of the original Stud horses are still around today, and are enjoying a leisurely retirement. Stud is more than just a horse riding facility. It is a forever home for the horses that live there. Stud offers private guided horse rides on Gili Trawangan in the mornings or afternoons when the temperatures are more comfortable. With a range of horses to suit all levels of rider, we can take you for your first ever horse ride, or blow away the cobwebs with a gallop down the beach. The fabulous Gili Trawangan sunsets provide the perfect backdrop for the most sensational Instagram photos, or just ticking something off your bucket list. When you ride with Stud, you can feel confident that the horse you are riding is happy and healthy, and that you are contributing to the happy lives of many rescued and retired horses.

Every ride at Stud Rescue helps give horses like Rainbow the retirement they deserve. ❤️🐴

For more than 15 years, Rainbow worked tirelessly pulling one of the island's rubbish collection carts. Thanks to funding from Animal Aid Abroad, we were able to replace his cart with a motorbike, allowing him to retire and come and live with us.

These days, Rainbow's life looks very different. Instead of working long hours, he spends his days grazing with his friends, enjoying plenty of love and care... and, if we're honest, finding creative new ways to break our fences! 😅🌿

It's exactly how retirement should be.

Meet Mamba. ❤️🐴

For more than 15 years, Mamba worked tirelessly pulling one of Gili Trawangan's rubbish collection carts, carrying heavy loads of waste every single day, seven days a week.

As he grew older, Mamba developed Cushing's disease, meaning he could no longer cope with the demands of the job. Without another option, he would almost certainly have ended up at the slaughterhouse.

We believed he deserved so much better.

Thanks to the incredible support of Animal Aid Abroad, who funded his replacement motorbike and contributes towards his monthly care, Mamba was finally able to retire and come to Stud Rescue.

Today, instead of pulling tonnes of rubbish, he spends his days with his friends in the paddocks, receiving the veterinary care he needs, and enjoying the peaceful retirement he earned after a lifetime of hard work.

At Stud Rescue, we never sell our horses. When they arrive here, they stay with us for the rest of their lives. It's a commitment we're incredibly proud of, but it also means our sanctuary has limited space. Sadly, because every place is a forever home, we can't continue taking in new horses indefinitely.

Every ride, lesson, and visit helps make stories like Mamba's possible.

Our horses always come first.

We carefully manage our daily schedule to ensure every horse has plenty of time to rest, never works excessive hours, and enjoys at least one full day off every week. Their welfare is at the heart of everything we do, and that's something we'll never compromise.

Because of this, we can only accommodate a limited number of rides each day.

If you're planning to join us for a beach ride, private lesson, or one of our other horse experiences, we highly recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.

We have recently been made aware of people approaching tourists on the beach with horses and falsely claiming that they are from Stud Horse Riding & Rescue.

Please be aware that these people are NOT associated with Stud.

Unfortunately, they appear to be using our name and reputation to gain the trust of visitors, so please look out for the following:

We NEVER tout for customers on the beach. If we don't have customers booked, our horses are resting comfortably in their stables — they are not being walked around the beach looking for riders.

You will ALWAYS be asked to meet us at Stud. All of our rides begin with you meeting our team at our stables, where we can introduce you to your horse, provide a helmet and complete the necessary safety checks.

Children will NEVER ride one of our horses without a helmet. No exceptions.
Our staff are clearly identifiable and wear Stud T-shirts.

Our horses are never randomly offered for rides on the beach. If someone approaches you on the beach offering you a horse ride and tells you they are from Stud, they are not.

We work extremely hard to maintain high standards of horse welfare and rider safety, and it is very concerning to see other operators attempting to use our name and reputation.

If you are ever unsure whether someone genuinely represents Stud, please contact us directly before agreeing to a ride.

One of the things we love most about Stud Rescue is our location. Nestled in one of Gili Trawangan's most peaceful corners, we're surrounded by open land, nature, and the island's beautiful rugged hill.

Because so much of the area remains undeveloped, we're lucky enough to receive regular visits from Gili's wild deer—and every now and then, we're treated to something extra special... this little albino beauty. 🤍🦌
