🌊 Welcome to the Team, Pete! 🌊

We are excited to welcome Pete Hamerton as our Dive Centre Manager here at Bunaken Oasis! Pete joined us in June 2024, bringing with him a wealth of experience from over 15 years of educating divers and managing dive operations across the UK, South-East Asia, and Mexico.

Originally from the UK, Pete has been passionate about diving since 2003. He became a Recreational Instructor in 2009 and quickly expanded into Technical, Cave, and Closed Circuit Rebreather (CCR) diving from 2010 onwards. He is a PADI IDC Staff Instructor and a Technical and Cave Diving Instructor with multiple agencies. He also holds qualifications on several CCR units and is currently working towards his CCR Instructor certifications.

When he's not diving, you can find Pete enjoying surfing, playing tennis, or following F1. We're thrilled to have Pete on board and look forward to the adventures ahead!

Join us in giving Pete a warm welcome! 👏🌊

Oasis Explorers is the technical training facility based at Bunaken Oasis. We are currently seeking a technical instructor (couple or single) with a challenging yet exciting goal: to establish Bunaken as a go-to destination for both technical diving and technical diving training. If you think this could be you, please click this link for more details.

Oasis Explorers is a technical training facility located at Bunaken Oasis Dive Resort & Spa in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. While Oasis Explorers is part of the Dive Centre and reports to the Dive Centre Manager, it is a distinctly separate operation with its own social media presence, targets, equipm...

Bunaken Oasis is delighted to announce that we have been voted ‘Indonesia’s Leading Dive Resort’ by the World Travel Awards for the fifth year running.

To achieve this prestigious award yet again is a testament to everyone on the team, and a tribute to their tremendous efforts in maintaining (and improving!) the resort while we closed due to the pandemic.

A huge thank you to everyone who voted for us!

Owing to a family illness, Spencer and Chi Felton, our technical diving consultants, are returning to Germany.

Bunaken Oasis would like to thank Spencer and Chi for their hard work and success in establishing Oasis Explorers as a first-class technical diving operation, and we wish them every success in the future.

We will be seeking replacement technical instructors, and a detailed job advertisement will be issued in the coming days.

When we first started technical diving, carrying deco cylinders (clipping additional tanks to the harness) and switching second stage regulators were initially the biggest physical changes to learn. ⁣

And since recreational divers need a minimum of 25-30 dives (depending on agency) to start technical dive training, we highly recommend beginner divers to try sidemount diving first. ⁣

Sidemount diving teaches us how to dive with a long-hose and short-hose configuration, easily manage our breathing gases and deal with simple problems such as a free-flowing regulator in a short, easy course that can be completed before (or in combination with) your advanced open water course. ⁣

Even for divers who aren’t yet convinced on technical diving, sidemount diving gives you the ability to improve your skills, increase your air/nitrox volume, dive more comfortably and possibly prepare for cavern/wreck diving. ⁣

Travelling with sidemount gear is even simpler as these BCDs don’t have back plates and for technical divers we don’t have to worry about the dive centre filling twin tanks for us. ⁣

Do you dive sidemount yet? And why? ⁣

How do you do your pre-dive checks? ⁣

We always perform our pre-dive checklists as a team with all divers before we enter the water. But we don’t touch each other’s equipment unless necessary and with that diver’s expressed permission. ⁣

We usually work through the checklists with the least experienced diver in the lead. That way, we can ensure that all divers aren’t pressured to start the dive without knowing exactly what they’re doing. It also helps students to grow as divers, and become more active team members rather than followers. ⁣

If we didn’t do it this way then more experienced divers may not realise when their team members need assistance; perhaps they’ve forgotten a step or aren’t familiar enough with their buddy’s or their own equipment. The aim is to make safety a team effort and a joint responsibility. ⁣

Scuba diving can be hazardous if mistakes are ignored or not recognised. As technical divers we must always continue fine tuning or reviewing our skills, above and below the water, in order to continue enjoying the underwater world for a very long time. ⁣

Located in North Sulawesi, Bunaken National Park was the first established Marine Park in Indonesia, but its divers could only ever venture into recreational depths until recently. ⁣

With the volcanic history of the islands, the plunging coral walls and rich, nutrient waters, Bunaken is the perfect place to discover new species and explore never-before-seen dive sites. ⁣

Coral lives beyond 80m here, with extended light zones giving 100m dives a unique environment and untouched reefs giving every diver the feeling they are making history. ⁣
