Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce Frank Lampard as our new head coach.

One of the greatest players in our history during his long and illustrious career, Lampard returns to Stamford Bridge having signed a three-year contract.

The 41-year-old said: ‘I am immensely proud to be returning to Chelsea as head coach. Everyone knows my love for this club and the history we have shared, however, my sole focus is on the job in hand and preparing for the season ahead. I am here to work hard, bring further success to the club and I cannot wait to get started.’

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia (pictured above right) added: ‘It gives us great pleasure to welcome Frank back to Chelsea as head coach. Frank possesses fantastic knowledge and understanding of the club and last season, he demonstrated he is one of the most talented young coaches in the game.

‘After 13 years with us as a player, where he became a club legend and our record goalscorer, we believe this is the perfect time for him to return and are delighted he has done so. We will do everything we can to ensure he has all the support required to be a huge success.’

The two clubs have reached an agreement for the early termination of Sarri’s contract with Chelsea FC which had two years left to run and is ending at his request.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: ‘In talks we had following the Europa League final, Maurizio made it clear how strongly he desired to return to his native country, explaining that his reasons for wanting to return to work in Italy were significant.

'He also believed it important to be nearer his family, and for the well-being of his elderly parents he felt he needed to live closer to them at this point.

'Maurizio leaves Chelsea with thanks from us all for the work he and his assistants did during the season he spent as our head coach, and for winning the Europa League, guiding us to another cup final and a third-place finish in the Premier League.

'We would also like to congratulate him on securing the role as big as any in Serie A and to wish him the best of luck for the future.’

Sarri moved to London last summer, joining us from Napoli, and his Chelsea side made a strong start to the Premier League campaign. We won our first five games and went unbeaten in all competitions from the start of the league season until late November when we suffered a reverse against Tottenham at Wembley.

Progression from the group stage of the Europa League was comfortable and a home Premier League win against eventual champions Manchester City a highlight in December.

Maurizio Sarri is leaving Chelsea Football Club to return to Italy and become manager of Juventus.

Another Chelsea season has been completed and another piece of silverware is in the cabinet. Having previewed the action throughout, it is time for club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton to switch to review mode and look back at the Chelsea campaign…

Chelsea’s 84th season in the top flight and 103rd overall played out like a good novel. It started with a bang and while the middle chapters toyed with our emotions, the last few pages delivered the killer lines.

After sealing third place for the fifth time (our 22nd top-six finish in 23 campaigns and 14th top-three finish) the best was saved for last.

By the end the club’s 16th piece of silverware over the 17 years of Roman Abramovich’s ownership was in the bag; that is five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, one Champions League and now two Europa Leagues.

A continental campaign to savour that began with chairman Bruce Buck handing out bags of crisps to travelling fans who had been subject to long waits on coaches in Thessaloniki in Greece ended with Maurizio Sarri staring lovingly at the first major medal of his coaching career in Baku.

Could Jose Mourinho make an unexpected return to Stamford Bridge if Maurizio Sarri leaves the club? Frank Lampard is the strong favourite for the job but perhaps there's another candidate, writes Paul Gilmour.

In the build-up to the Champions League final, Jose Mourinho was interviewed by Eleven Sports in Portugal and it largely went unnoticed in the British media.

The quotes were not widely picked up but what he said will spark debate among Chelsea fans after their former manager hinted at returning to Stamford Bridge for a third stint at some point in his career.

While it looks unlikely that it will be this time around as the London club appear to have set their sights on Frank Lampard, Mourinho's words raise an interesting question.

Would Chelsea fans welcome him back?

The critics will say that the loss of Eden Hazard combined with a potential transfer ban means Mourinho would not be suited to a return under the current circumstances but in his interview, the Portuguese coach appeared to open the door to a different approach.

His reputation is of course based on his ability to win trophies and doing it in a pragmatic way, although he will argue that his Chelsea side with Damien Duff and Arjen Robben, as well as his free-scoring Real Madrid side, also entertained.

Intriguingly, there seems a willingness to adapt.

"I've been using the time to work on my future, to improve my technical staff, to find a new dimension to my work, without obviously losing what I am," Mourinho said to Eleven Sports.

"It was me who, being as I am and thinking as I think, got to where I am. But my work has been at that level. I want to be better, I want to adapt, I want to reformulate myself and that's what I've been doing."

This reference to adapting could be an acknowledgement of how well received the work of Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino has been at Liverpool and Tottenham respectively.

Pochettino has yet to win a trophy with Spurs but his teams have a reputation for playing good football and the feeling is that the club is moving forward under his leadership.

Klopp had not won with Liverpool until the recent Champions League final but what he has done is build slowly with constant improvement and that has given them the platform to be in what is now an incredibly strong position going forward.

Spurs are expected to buy this summer while Klopp has been backed in the transfer market in recent years - but patience has been required.

A perfect example is their decision to wait on the opportunity to sign Alisson when they were having problems with Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius. Ask any United or Chelsea fan if Mourinho would have waited and you know the answer, but is that changing?

"Winning in a different fifth championship or winning a Champions League for a different third club are things I'd like to do, but I'm not obsessed with it," continued Mourinho.

"I'm more convinced by the project. I want to go happy. I don't want to accept a proposal without really being convinced. And to be happy it does not necessarily mean winning, which has always been my essence. But if they told me 'today there are no conditions to win, but we want you to create the conditions to win', I would evaluate."

Chelsea may fall into that category because of their transfer ban and the need for a long-term strategy. Could Mourinho adapt enough to deliver that vision? He would certainly have the personality to impress Chelsea's young players and may just squeeze enough out of them.

Joe Cole has gone on record describing how Mourinho understood him as a young player, while Karim Benzema also praised the manager's handling of him during his formative years.

Chelsea can call on a number of high-profile players who played out on loan last season including Tammy Abraham, Michy Batshuayi, Alvaro Morata, Victor Moses, Kenedy, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Kurt Zouma.

They also added Christian Pulisic to their ranks as Hazard's replacement and had dozens of younger players out on loan.

EDEN HAZARD TRANSFER DEAL AGREED

Chelsea Football Club and Real Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of Eden Hazard to the Spanish Club.
The move is subject to the 28-year-old completing a medical and signing his contract with Real.

Hazard leaves Chelsea as one of the great players in our history. He helped the team win the Premier League on two occasions, the Europa League twice and the FA Cup and League Cup once. He has been voted Chelsea Player of the Year on a record four occasions.

A shining star throughout the many successes the team achieved, Hazard played 352 games for the club, the 23rd highest total in our history, and scored 110 goals, the ninth most.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: ‘Although it is with sadness we say goodbye to Eden and we made it absolutely clear to him the club wished him to stay, we respect the decision he has made to take on a new challenge in a different country and follow his childhood dream of playing for Real Madrid.

‘The memories he leaves us with will not fade. He provided all who watched Chelsea play with great entertainment and many match-winning contributions, and for that we thank Eden enormously. He has been a model professional throughout his time at the club, a wonderful individual to have around and a joy to work with. We look forward to welcoming him back to Stamford Bridge in the future.’

Chelsea Football Club wishes Eden well as we say a fond goodbye.

Eden Hazard set for Real Madrid switch after Chelsea agree £88m deal
Real Madrid have agreed a deal in principle for Chelsea forward Eden Hazard worth £88m plus significant add-ons, Sky Sports News understands.

It is understood Chelsea were demanding a fee in the region of £130m.

Hazard, who has one year left on his Chelsea contract, said it was his wish to leave Stamford Bridge after scoring twice to beat Arsenal 4-1 in the the Europa League final.

"I think it is goodbye, but in football you never know," the 28-year-old said after the final whistle in Baku.

Chelsea might not be able to sign a replacement due to a two-window transfer ban imposed by FIFA after an investigation into the club's signing of foreign U18 players.

Zinedine Zidane is looking to rebuild his Real squad after a dismal season which saw them eliminated from the Champions League at the last-16 stage and finish third in La Liga - a record 19 points behind Barcelona, who knocked them out in the semi-final of the Copa del Rey.

They have already signed centre-back Eder Militao from Porto as well as striker Luka Jovic from Frankfurt.

Hazard was the dominant force behind Chelsea's surge to secure a Champions League spot.

He enjoyed his most productive season in English football in 2018/19 with 16 goals and 15 assists - and was top of the Premier League player rankings in several categories.

Youri Tielemans, who spent the season on loan at Leicester, is with Hazard and the rest of the Belgium squad preparing for European Qualifiers against Kazakhstan (Saturday) and Scotland (Tuesday).

The midfielder says speculation on Hazard's future has had no impact on the 28-year-old's attitude and has backed him to take a step up once he finalises his move to the Bernabeu.

Tielemans: "Playing with him is fantastic when you give him the ball you look at him and say wow. It's really easy to play with him. He also does his best on the pitch and tries to enjoy when he's on the pitch.

"He is always relaxed. There's no change in his attitude [this week].

"He is one of the best players in the world at the moment. Why can't he become the best at Real? I think if he wants to he can be.

Hazard 'happy and relieved' deal agreed
Hazard's future has been in the spotlight since he suggested he was keen to leave after last summer's World Cup and, according to Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Alvaro Montero, he was pleased by the news of an agreement.

Montero told Sky Sports News: "This morning we've discovered that the player, who is in Belgium right now preparing for two games against Kazakhstan and Scotland, was happy and relieved because he realised that Real Madrid and Chelsea have agreed a deal."

He added: "It is said that he's going to play on the right wing… but if Zidane changes formation, maybe next season he's not going to play 4-3-3 but 4-4-2, and in that moment Hazard will play as a No 10 or maybe as a No 8, but especially on the right wing of Real Madrid's attack."
