🎓 There is a big difference between doing a skill and teaching a skill.
Here our ITC candidates are practicing the Emergency Swimming Ascent (ESA).
For an instructor, the focus is not only on the student performing the skill. You need to think about the whole group.
Where are the other students? Are they properly positioned and under control? Can you keep an eye on them while supervising the student performing the ascent? And where should you position yourself to maintain control throughout the exercise?
In this scenario, the other students wait together on a line at the surface. This keeps the group organized while allowing the instructor to focus on the student performing the ESA.
These details are an important part of instructor training.
Being a dive instructor is not simply about having excellent diving skills. It is about awareness, positioning, control, communication and anticipating what could happen next.
That’s what our candidates learn during the SSI ITC at Oceans 5 Gili Air: not just how to dive, but how to safely teach others to dive. 🤿
