One of the biggest mistakes new divers make is waiting until their ears feel uncomfortable before trying to equalize. By then, it's often much harder to relieve the pressure.

As you descend, the water pressure around you increases surprisingly quickly. Equalizing early and often helps keep the pressure inside your ears balanced, making your descent much smoother and more comfortable.

If you ever feel discomfort, don't push through it. Stop your descent, signal to your guide and buddy that you have a problem, ascend slightly until the pressure eases, and try again. There's no prize for being the fastest diver to the bottom.

A slow, relaxed descent isn't just more comfortable—it also gives you more time to enjoy everything happening around you.

What's the best equalizing tip you've learned while diving?

🐠 Meet the Reef: Cuttlefish

Don't let the name fool you—cuttlefish aren't fish at all. They're close relatives of octopuses and squid, and they're some of the ocean's most incredible shape-shifters.

They can change their colour and pattern in less than a second to blend into their surroundings, communicate with each other, or surprise unsuspecting prey.

Keep an eye on the sandy patches and reefs around Gili Air—you might spot one before it disappears right in front of your eyes.

Have you ever seen a cuttlefish while diving or snorkeling?

Octopuses have thousands chromatophores under their skin. These are specialised cells that allow them to change colour instantaneously. Blue-ringed octopuses put on a threat display using these cells and iridophores, a specialised type of light-reflecting chromatophore that gives the blue rings their iridescence. 🌀

When alarmed or attacked, these animals quickly change colour. They use muscles to make their blue patterns appear, displaying them on top of a yellow or cream-coloured base with dark pigmented cells underneath the rings, which helps to intensify their colour. 💙

Like lots of other octopuses, blue-ringed octopuses can also use their chromatophores to help camouflage themselves. They spend a lot of their time tucked away in crevices, hiding from animals that might try to eat them. 🪨
