AirAsia has announced the cancellation of its routes from Australia to Bali due to the rising costs of jet fuel. The final flights from Melbourne to Denpasar and Adelaide to Denpasar will take place on June 18.
โThis decision has been made in response to the sustained increase in global jet fuel prices caused by the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East,โ stated Achmad Sadikin Abdurachman, general manager of Indonesia AirAsia.
He added, โThis operating environment has led to the need to refocus our network on routes that remain operationally viable at this time. AirAsia understands the suspension impacts long-made travel plans, and we apologize for the inconvenience this decision has caused. We want to thank our guests for their support and understanding.โ
The airline is reaching out to affected ticketholders directly, aiming to accommodate travelers on earlier flights through Kuala Lumpur.
With crude oil prices persistently above $100 a barrel, the cost of filling an aircraft with jet fuel has more than doubled since the onset of the conflict in the Middle East.
In related news, ultra-budget US airline Spirit announced its immediate shutdown after 50 years of operation. Meanwhile, Air New Zealand has raised ticket prices and warned of expected full-year losses between NZ$340 million to NZ$390 million (approximately $278 million to $319 million).
AirAsia has been significantly impacted by the global oil crisis. Just three days after the conflict erupted and the crucial Strait of Hormuz was closed, the airline increased its Adelaide to Bali route from four flights a week to seven, effective March 21, with plans to boost it to ten flights during peak times. The Melbourne to Bali route was also announced on March 3.
The focus on routes from Adelaide and Melbourne has resulted in the cancellation of the Darwin to Kuala Lumpur and Darwin to Bali routes, which had only recently commenced operations in March and June of 2025.
