Magyar Bow
The Magyars were a confederacy of tribes, that came to conquer and inhabit what is now modern day Hungary. In Hungarian folklore, the Magyars and the Huns were descended from two sons of Ni**od; Magor and Hunor. They had been lured away to pursue a magnificent white stag, which led them to the fertile lands of the Carpathian Basin.
No fully intact ancient Magyar bows have been recovered from burials and cemeteries in the Eurasian steppe however, their rough shape could be discerned from thin bone plates which were used in the construction of the bow, as a means of adding rigidity and strength to the handle as well as the siyahs or horns (szarv in Hungarian). The bow itself, being composed of organic material had decomposed yet the horn plates which reinforced the tips and handle of the bows had survived relatively intact.

The Mongol Bow
.
The Mongols storming out of Central Asia carved out the largest land empire in the world. United under their leader Ghengis Khan, the Mongols proved nearly unstoppable in their conquests. Their empire stretched across Eurasia, from the Sea of Japan in the East to Central Europe in the West and from Siberia in the North to the Indian subcontinent.
The main weapon used to accomplish this was the Mongol bow. Nomadic life in the harsh and unforgiving steppe preconditioned the hardy Mongolians for military success. Horsemanship and archery being essential for survival as herders and hunters in the vast grasslands of Mongolia. Children were brought up to ride horses and master the Mongol bow from a very early age.

Arrival of the Hun
.
The Huns valued mastery of both the horse and the bow. The primary reason for their military successes proved their mastery of mounted archery and their bow, a weapon more powerful than that of the Romans and in fact later copied by their rivals.
The vast expanse of grasslands that stretched from China to Hungary, called the Steppes, affected the history of the world. Countless migratory tribes traveled this area and came into contact with established civilizations, such as the Chinese and Roman Empires, in both friendly and hostile confrontations.
The Huns wrought havoc as they traveled East to West, which eventually led to the demise of the Western Roman Empire. Harsh life on the Steppes hardened the groups who survived in this world of constant warfare.
.
Europe especially feared the Huns because this nomadic group menaced and nearly destroyed the ancient city of Rome. The ferocity and swiftness of the Huns’ initial raids into Western Europe left the unprepared continent reeling. A Christian prayer expressed Europe’s terror of this group – A sagittis Hunorum, nos defende, Domine (From the arrows of the Huns, O Lord, defend us.) (to be continued)

Hun Archery
.
A thumb ring was likely used when releasing a Hunnic bow. The asymmetrical design made for a more effective and accurate shot using a thumb draw. A technique may have been employed where the bow was whipped forward and slightly downwards as the archery released his shot. The addition of horn plates to the siyahs or ears of the bow make it more rigid and add extra leverage to the shot.
The traditional Magyar bow also has horn plates on the siyahs. In addition to the recurve bow, scholars today credit the Huns with the introduction of the stirrup into Western Europe. With this innovation, the Hunnic warrior could “stand” in his saddle and freely turn as he released deadly arrows upon his enemies.

Scythian Bow
.
The Scythians remain the most famous of all ancient nomadic groups. They inhabited the Eurasian Steppes from the 9th century BC to the 1st century BC. Importantly, they were among the first civilizations to deploy mounted warfare. The Scythian bow was short yet powerful and proved ideal for mounted archery, a military approach that the Scythians mastered.

Egyptian Bows
.
The Ancient Egyptians fought many battles with the intention of keeping their jealous enemies from settling in the Nile Valley. Their enemies were referred to as the “Nine Bows”. The number nine was not taken literally, as their enemies had changed over time.
The number three was synonymous with plurality in Ancient Egypt. Therefore the number nine could be interpreted as “the Plural of Plurals” which was an expression used to describe the entirety of the Empire’s enemies. An Egyptian bow was ritualistically broken before battles to help ensure victory.
Nine bows can be seen on a pair of sandals that were recovered from Tutankhamun’s tomb. When the pharaoh walked about, he would be symbolically stepping on Egypt’s enemies.

Ancient Egyptian Weapons
A composite bow was later adopted in the New Kingdom, after fighting off invading nomads from Asia known as the Hyskos.
.
The invaders also introduced chariot warfare, which the Egyptians readily adopted into their own army.
.
The upper ranks of society made up the chariot corps. Typical chariot units consisted of two horses pulling the chariot into battle with one driver at the reigns and an archer wielding his composite bow and spears.
