VIKINGS MATCH REPORT no. 9

JIFL Season 2015 – 2016, Wednesday 20.01.2016

VIKINGs – SABOR LATINOS 4 – 3
-----------------------------------------------------------

This ninth JIFL game of the first leg of the season was a heroic fight, in which an excellent team spirit, devotion and sticking to the tactical plan till the very last whistle brought the Vikings a well-deserved win over a good playing Sabor Latinos team. The coach selected 15 players of which he though would form a winning and they didn’t let him down. The Vikings delivered an outstanding performance resulting in a match to remember.

The Match
The tactical plan was to play compact and the midfielders Diego, Christian, Soren and Mark as well as attacker Seamus running back to defending midfield positions, as soon as Sabor got the ball on their own half an start to play their tikkie takkie Barcelona like game. With Thomas as the exception, cause he needs to be sharp when an opportunity presents itself. Directed and lead by the central defender Jacob, the midfielders run more miles than they ever must have done before.. The other defenders Harry, Jon G and Alex were much focused and hardly gave the Sabor attackers a chance. Alex and the experienced way of his playing was a perfect combination with Mark on the left side.

If Thomas would have had a bit more luck in two occasions and Christian V in one, we could have lead with 3 against 0 after 15 minutes. In the first 20 to 25 minutes the Vikings were very dominant with almost no ball loss and making the Sabor Latinos players running behind them. The Vikings were showing some excellent team play, but to all Vikings present regrets more chances were missed.

After 20 minutes however our Viking persistence paid off. Alex received the ball from Nur, out maneuvered Sabor attacker Rodrigo and passed to Mark, who directly passed on to the sprinting Diego just over the middle line. Diego – for once – didn’t hold the ball, but controlled it and saw Christian V. running on the left outer side of the pitch. A deep cross ball was skillfully controlled by Christian V, who ran to the end of the pitch, fooled a Sabor defender (with a move that showed that Christian must have had a ballet course or two in the past) and launched a perfect crossing into the penalty area, where he saw Thomas steaming up to the goal. Thomas jumped high and rose to unprecedented heights and managed to get his head against the right part of the ball, thus placed the ball in the goal on a spot where neither the goallie, nor any other Sabor was present. The goallie saw the header but only caught some air, 1 – 0. A superb header Thomas!

The goal was a trigger for Sabor to show that can play ball as well and they managed to push the Vikings back. After 25 minutes Seamus and Soren were replaced by Stewart and Nils, so they could recover from the miles they ran and the battles they fought. It was in the last 15 minutes of thei first half that Mark and Alex on the left side showed that experience is valuable, if you use it and play simple. On the right side Diego, Stewart and Jon G. ran their butts off as well but in a more battling and energy eating way. They nevertheless also managed to stop or intercept Sabor attacks over the right side. Jacob and Harry made sure that every ball that came through was for one of them. And when needed Nur was there to keep his sheet clean.

Unfortunately the first real aggressive attack of one of our battling Vikings caused a free kick about 20 meters from the goal. A canon ball launched by Sabor Julito could only be stopped by Nur, but the ball was too hard to keep it and it bounce back from his breast just in front of the feet of the incoming Latino Alberto, who tipped in the equalizer just about half time, 1 – 1.

In the second half the coach didn’t want to change the tactics too much, because he was more than satisfied with the performance of the team. He told the team that goals would surely come, because we just cannot be unlucky in finishing all the time. To assist Thomas more, Nils was pulled back to attacking midfielder while Christian V was moved to the left attacker position. Another tactical suggesting was that the midfielders should put more pressure from inside out on the midfield and not to play too much on the outside of the pitch, especially when Sabor has the ball. A more organization on the midfield. That was understood well.
The second half Vikings started as in the first half, controlling the game and attacking more and more. Christian and Diego got more space and showed Sabor, we have skillful players alike as well.

After we first missed two more big chances in the 14th and 15th minute Thunder Thomas showed two more times why he can also be called lethal Thomas. A characteristic usage of the lower part of the back side of his body – after he received the ball from Christian V – put him in a shooting position, wwhhammmm a straight shot in the right corner was too much to handle for the goallie and the 2 – 1 on the score board. Not even 60 seconds later, while the Vikings on the tribune were actually still cheering the lead, Thomas received the ball again after Nils intercepted and passed to him. A dry and precise shot followed and 3 -1 on the scoring boards.
Four minutes later the referee misjudged a fair tackle from one of our left defenders and decided it was even in the penalty box. This present was gratefully accepted by Sabor and Nur was left no chance 3 – 2.

Christian and Diego were furious about so much soccer injustice and took revenge on the only allowed and appreciated way, with a superb and excellent play! Receiving a pass from a defender Christian run from right to left keeping the ball with some glue at his left foot. The 3 Sabor Latinos players he out maneuvered looked like wooden dolls, so easy it looked how he overcame their attacks. He then waited till Diego was on a full sprint starting from his own half. At the right moment he passed the ball and Diego was gone, ging for victory. Some Sabor man, seeing the body posture it must have been Pedro, tried to run after him, but it was like a Ferrari against a Toyota Alphard. That Pedro only saw the back of Diego. With all the time of the world when Diego reached the penalty box, he waited for the goaliee to move and shot it simply in the open space of the goal, 4 – 2. Bravissimo!

What than followed was frustration on the side of some of the Sabor Latinos players. Sabor attacker Rodrigo couldn’t control himself anymore and hit Jacob or tried to hit him twice in the face, from which one was directly on target, luckily without causing any damage on Jacob;s pretty looks! Though the referee didn’t see it, his linesman did and a well-earned red card was Rodrigo’s reward. It must have been difficult, but the Vikings in the defense with Martin, Jacob, Harry (a little less) and Christian S. kept amazingly cool and didn’t jump in this trap of some of the Sabor Latinos players; making some extra fuss and hoping the opponent reacts negative and is also been sent off. Chapeau for the defense!!

After a few minutes Pedro tried to pull another trick and sneakily brought in another player, to make his team play with 11 men again. It was noticed by the Vikings, but the referee refused to stop the play immediately and because of a moment of lesser concentration Sabor Latinos scored the 4 – 3, be it this with an illegal player on the pitch. Trying to win some time and cooling the Vikings off, Seamus and Alex were brought in again. A hectic last five minutes didn’t change the score anymore, though both Diego and Thomas missed some excellent chances to score another goal. With 4 minutes of extra time granted, Sabor was too overpowered to score again. A well-deserved victory in a heroic, most memorable game. Three points added and still in for the title.

VIKINGS MATCH REPORT Game no. 7

JIFL Season 2015 – 2016, Wednesday 11.11.2015

VIKINGS – Molly Malones 8 -4
-----------------------------------------------------------

After the first loss against Japan and the disappointing draw against the Germans, the Vikings were eager to get their fifth win of the season. A match against Seamus his old team at Vikings home ground in Lebak Bulus at ISCI. The coach received quite a number of subscribers and was happy to be able to form one of the strongest formations of Vikings this season. In his enthusiasm to realize a high score he decided to opt for a 3-4-3 line up. However the Jakarta jams didn’t want to cooperate and caused Jacob, Nils and Mark to come late to very late, the latter even missing the first half.

The Match
Too stubborn to let 3-4-3 formation plan go, the coach didn’t realize that the absence of certain players, would cause his battle plan being too risky for the players who now had to cope with it. If the coach would have realized that his tactics can only go with the players you have at that moment, he would have started a 4-4-2, which are most players used to. The coach got punished and hammered within 10 minutes of plaing time. Before the players realized where and how to run and position themselves in a 3-4-3, it was already 0 – 2 and Mollies looked to be on the verge of a spectacular result, tripling the one point they had managed in all season till this match.

Given the outcry of his team and the former coach, where some already starting cursing his choice, the coach wisely gave in and changed the formation after 20 minutes to the trusted 4-4-2. Within the next 20 minutes the game was changed and the half time score of 4 – 2 was reached.
The first goal was the outcome of a spectacular solo run of Todd, who could only be stopped against the allowed ways to do so. The penalty - as a result – was taken cool and experienced by Thomas, 1-2. Again a Toddious super run ended in a ball on a silver plate delivered to Thomas, who again finished cool, the equalizer to 2-2. Nate showed he gained strength and stamina again, after being ill for a week or so and after nice battling for the ball by Diego, Nate received and bringing the Vikings the lead, he scored the 3-2. Todd was really in one of his better days and was hurt by the words of the Vikings Chairman, who was disappointed in the lack of Toddious moments in the last two games against the J**s and the German. After two assists, he now did it all himself and out of a pass from Sunday, he signed for the 4-2.

After the brake we saw Mark make his appearance. Mollies surprisingly, were done. Probably their stamina was wasted in the first 20 minutes of the first half, as they were half as aggressive as before the break. However, one little mistake in the defense and a lucky shot from a Mollies attacker, suddenly made the score looking worrisome again, 4-3. It appeared that this didn’t bother the Vikings and they went on where they left in the first half.
One more time Thomas in one of the most fluent running attacks -bthat makes soccer sometimes looking so easy -- made the 5-3. Sunday showed his alertness and captured a half wrong pass from the Mollies defense and with a dry hard shot he put his name on the score board, 6-3. Jacob had little to do in the defense and more and more he steamed up, passing and receiving in time, thus resulting in one of the best goals of the day, 7-3.
Mollies found some last sternghts to set up their best attack and goal of the match, 7 -4. The last notable action was for Sunday again. Looking for the ball like a jaguar for his prey, around the box of Mollies he caught it and ‘whammm’ gone was the ball, to be found in the goal of the searching goalie of Mollies, 8 – 4.

The Line ups
First half (3-4-3 first 20 minutes)
GK: Nur Alfian
DF: Martin – Jon – Christian
MF: Nate – Flemming – Sunday - Diego
AT: Todd - Thomas – Seamus

First half (4-4-2 after 20 minutes)

GK: Nur Alfian
DF: Martin – Jacob – Alex – Christian (Stewart)
MF: Nate – Flemming (Nils) – Sunday - Diego
AT: Todd - Thomas

Second half

GK: Nur Alfian
DF: Stewart – Jacob – Alex (Christian) – Jon
MF: Nate (Moon – Mark (Martin) – Sunday - Diego
AT: Seamus (Todd) – Nils (Thomas)

The Memorable moments
• Two possible new players, Christian and Claudio, came to watch their maybe future team mates. After the game they were tested on their beer intake capabilities. As your reporter went home after his two cokes he doesn’t know how their level was scaled.
• Seamus, using a rope to keep his pants up (since he misses about 10 kilos), lost a few easy duels from his former Mollies compatriots. A fit Seamus would not let that happen. He also missed two great chances for a goal, but he is forgiven due to his weak psychical state. It was already amazing he could or tried to play. Unfortunately his shots were as hard as the children in his school class could shoot. Seamus get your kilos and power back man. We miss you….!
• Stewart received no yellow or red card, though he turned red of anger himself, when he was tackled from behind and got his ankle hurt. He started two meters behind the opponent, when they run for the ball. Stewart was so fast that within 10 meters he was half a meter before the man, who could do nothing else than accidentally kick him, what Stewart didn’t appreciate,
• Jacob’s goal. A run from his own box, receiving the ball from Nur, passing and receiving it back twice and finally delivering the ball in the net on the opposite side of the field. A 90 meters run, perfect!

The Goal scores
Thomas 3x
Sunday 2x
Todd 1x
Nate 1x
Jacob 1x

The Naughty ones
Nobody was booked

The MOM
For his “being everywhere on the pitch’ play the Mollies chose for Diego as the Man of the Match.

VIKINGS MATCH REPORT no. 3

JIFL Season 2015 – 2016, Saturday 26.09.2015

BUGILS - VIKING 1– 3
-----------------------------------------------------------

In the third match of the season the top spot – the number one position - was at stake. Both Bugils and Vikings won their first two matches. This meant an extra pressure and tension on the players today, to perform well. Present were 18 players, where the absence of key players as Jacob, Sunday and Nate (in the form of his life) made the coach a bit nervous. The chosen squad for today’s match however proved to the coach, that less talented players can run the extra mile to overcome their lack of developed skills.

The Match
This Saturday afternoon in a boiling hot atmosphere at some police soil in Blok M, the Vikings and Bugils delivered an entertaining game.
A real battle for becoming the number one in the league for at least two weeks, so with the right flavour. Both teams missing some key players, made it actually more exciting. It were the Vikings though who showed more confidence in the first half.
Playing everywhere it is necessary, today Jon started as the right back. Though silence is his motto when on the pitch, his feet don’t seem to agree. They speak well and in the 15th minute they interrupted a crossing from the Bugils midfield, trying to reach one of their attackers. No, the feet of Jon said and they quickly intercepted the ball, coordinating with the eyes of Jon, where to deliver the round thing next. Jon didn’t say it off course, but his eyes saw Todd running from the left side and having some free space in front of him. Still speaking Jon’s feet launched a 35 meter pass. Perfectly timed Todd received the ball and skilfully he controlled it in his run and mislead his Bugils opponent trying to conquer him and/or the ball. Todd saw the space next to the right side of the goalie and just pinned it in, 0-1.
A nice up and down game was seen than, with the Vikings a bit more up. However in the 24th minute a moment of ignorance costs Vikings a goal and resulted in the equalizer for the Bugils. A weak crossing was not handled well by the defence and returned to an opponent just over the middle line. With a certain degree of blindness the Bugils midfielder just pumped the ball in the area before the box, where again with a certain level of luck another Bugils player received the ball, where the Viking defence wasn’t determined enough to really go for the blind ball sent. The Bugils attacker launched a shot that was too precise for Nur to get his hand against, 1 – 1.
Till half time both teams tried to get more out the play, but it were the Vikings who had the real goal chances.

In the second half the coach explained the Vikings should keep the field more compact and the full backs should push up more to the midfield, especially when we are attacking. In the first half there were too many big empty spaces in the midfield. Both Diego and Seamus were told to run a bit less and focus more on the position in the team and on the pitch, rather than trying to run as much as they can. The defenders, superior in their silence lead by Jon, were asked to coach each other more. Giving they hardly communicate with each other, our defence (Mark, Alex, Jon, Jonathan and Stewart) actually did a wonderful job, by just conceiving one goal.
The first attack in the second half was a marvellous one. Nils, both on character and body balance, out maneuvered his opponent and what followed was a superb crossing on Thomas, who once more showed he is a lethal finisher. With a turning half volley he ostensibly simple netted the ball, 1 – 2. It was his first chance so he went one on one. Following Nate’s ratio of the last game.
What followed was a nerve eating and nail biting play with a lot of scrimmages, without one of the teams really playing well. The Bugils were determined to score the equalizer as stubborn the Vikings were, to hold the lead and bring home (to EP!?!) a victorious win.
Agonizing moments for the Vikings goal weren’t many to be seen and with those high balls in the box, no chance; Nur Alfian shows to be Emperor in his area and allowed no dangerous attacks out of the air.
Where Bugils fans were desperately praying, shouting, begging and more for a well-deserved (in their eyes) goal to a 2 – 2 draw, our own Toddyboy decided it is not going to end in a 1 – 2 score. In a scrimmage he showed that being an attacker means being alert and quick on the first few meters or decimetres. The ball was free for just a moment and tens of crazy foreigners (Bugils) feet tried to kick it away, but Toddyboy was the fastest of them all and hammered the ball in the roof of the goal, 1 - 3.
Moon was brought in quick to win time, though it lasted only 10 seconds. The referees ended an exciting game and a joyful early Bacchus party started. Haven’t heard how it ended, but Jan was gone for the whole of Sunday after?

The Line ups
First half
GK: Nur Alfian
DF: Stewart (Martin) – Mark – Seamus (Alex) – Jon
MF: Phil (Seamus) – Flemming - Diego – Soren
AT: Todd (Kenny) – Nils (Thomas)

Second half
GK: Nur Alfian
DF: Martin (Jon) – Mark – Alex - Jonathan
MF: Soren (Phil) – Flemming – Diego – Todd
AT: Thomas (Moon) – Nils (Seamus)

Moon and David were loyal subs, ready to jump in when needed. For Moon that moment came just before the end of the game, used by the coach as a tactical replacement to win some time.

The Memorable moments
· It was so hot today that the referees agreed with water breaks in each half. Giving the coaches the possibility to correct the teams on weak points.
· Seeing Phil as 57 year old man running almost as much as Diego and Todd in their 30-ies.
· Flemming as another 50 ++-er, playing the full 90 minutes and giving the Vikings game the intellect, so it seems anyway.
· The flag post in the middle of the pitch. Situated exactly at the line of the field. Lucky Stewart was playing the other side of the field. It might have cost the Vikings a new Flag pole.
· On a hot day and as real Vikings, there was enough cold beer at the start of the game, but where was the water? The driver of Phil solved the issue, else we would have steamed in the second half with no doubt disastrous results.
· Our beer conservator Jan was there, at least his body was. Lucky Jakob was there to take care of him, like he did last week with Sunday Jang. Or best 12th man you are, Jakob.
· After the game, the Vikings hung around for another two hours, out of joy and since all beer had to be finished no use anyway to go. The police security wondered how so few people could consume so many cans. On the other hand, the Bugils were gone in a flash. Taking all their beer with them for another match (!).

The Goal scores and Assists
Todd (Jon)
Thomas (Nils)
Todd (out of scrimmage)

The Naughty ones
Stewart was back and you can count on him and he delivered well. Another yellow card for his archives. By the way Stewart the old Beatles song wasn’t titled “Yellow sub card” it was named “Yellow sub Marine”.

The MOM
The Bugils choose Todd because of his goals and energy in the second half. Competed with Diego and Seamus for the man with the most miles as well. Good job done, Toddyboy.
