JUDGEMENT vs COMPASSION

From where I’m standing, I see too many good-hearted people reserve compassion for everyone else but themselves. Their self-judgement can be unrelenting.

Not only is this a tortuous existence but also I don’t believe it’s at all useful for meaningful change.

Judgement is the thief of empowerment. Through a psychodynamic lens, it is a critical parent talking down to a compliant child. When we self-judge, we are perpetuating an unhelpful psychological dynamic.

When we show self-compassion, we are no longer a disempowered child. We are a conscious adult with agency; we can logically and emotionally assess our behaviour and adapt accordingly. Compassion doesn’t mean the absence of accountability. It means that we can find ways to forgive what we did to forge a new way through.

We can grow without judgement.

IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW ABOUT COACHES 👀

We are wonderfully human just like you! 💖

We have our own:
🧠 cognitive blindspots
🧠 limiting assumptions/beliefs
🧠 painful memories and traumas

We have strong interpersonal skills and have worked hard to develop acute awareness of ourselves, our clients and of humans generally. But we deserve no ultimate pedestal.

I said to one of my amazing clients only the other day that “I grow right alongside you” - and I am beyond grateful for that daily opportunity! 🙌🏼💪🏼

Not all results aren’t certain. But we can make them far more probable by acting with
➡️ relevance
➡️ efficiency
➡️ consistency

Extra emphasis on taking action with where YOU WANT to go. Not just where you think you should go. Where society tells you you want to go.

You deserve to take action on your own dreams! Do it for you. 💚

As my diploma journey with comes to an end, I am struck by the two people I see in these portraits.

September Me was ready to learn, pen in hand, scribbling down every useful quote, every key word from the client to eloquently reflect back. The pressure to “know” the answer was palpable!

January Me is ready to listen, green tea in hand. Zero pen in sight! The courage and desire to “not know” the answer is my new North Star.

What’s changed? TRUST

✨ I trust that the client can and will courageously lead the conversation
✨ I trust that they will tell me what’s most useful in what they just said, because they just said it!
✨ I trust that I will question/reflect/reframe well because I’ve listened well first
✨ I trust that I bring incredible value by being more and doing less
✨ I trust that the relationship we’ve created together is strong enough to weather imperfection, “stuckness” and lapses in flow - because that’s being human
✨ I trust that radical honesty will strengthen, not break, us.
