Think sharks have to keep swimming to breathe? Think again. 🦈
Watch closely… you can actually see this Whitetip Reef Shark breathing while resting completely still on the ocean floor.

So how is that possible?

Unlike sharks that rely on constant forward movement to push water over their gills, Whitetip Reef Sharks can actively pump water through their gills using their mouth and cheek muscles. This allows them to rest motionless while still breathing normally.

And this wasn’t just one shark. During this encounter in Amed, we watched two Whitetip Reef Sharks alternate between resting on the sand and slowly cruising around — an incredible example of how perfectly adapted these animals are to their environment.

What looks like complete stillness is actually a fascinating survival strategy.

A special moment beneath the surface of Amed! 🌊🦈
We were lucky enough to spend several minutes watching this pair of white-tip reef sharks circling each other in what appeared to be courtship behavior.
They seemed completely undisturbed by our presence — giving us an incredible glimpse into life on Amed’s reefs. ❤️
