Ever wondered what whale sharks do when no one is watching? 👀🦈

For International Whale Shark Day, scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and Murdoch University shared incredible point-of-view footage from temporary fin-mounted cameras at Ningaloo Reef.

The study revealed the largest catalog of whale shark behaviors to date, capturing 36 distinct feeding strategies:

🔹 The "Energy Saver" Drift: Sinking passively to the seafloor with their mouths wide open to vacuum up food with minimal effort.

🔹 Surface Sprints: High-energy sprints chasing down krill swarms near the surface.

🔹 Full-Depth Hunters: Proving they don’t just cruise near the top—they feed across every single layer of the ocean, right down to the seabed.

The non-invasive tags detached naturally after 24 hours without disturbing the sharks, giving researchers a rare, harmless look into how these endangered gentle giants survive when food is scarce in tropical waters. 🌊✨
