My Chow Gar

My Chow Gar Authentic online training in Chow Gar Southern Praying Mantis, rooted in the lineage of Grandmaster Ip Chee Keung.

We build internal structure, shock power, and instructor-level practitioners to preserve and transmit the art worldwide. We do this with 3 important tools:
- Recorded lessons and training sessions which can be simply followed. These contain very precise and clear instructions about the techniques and exercises, and the training sessions are guided. We give different type of guided trainings to mak

e our students understand quickly how a well-structured training looks. By the end of the first module the students are able to confidently create their own training session based on their knowledge.

- Closed Facebook Group & Online Live Coaching sessions. We created a closed group for the members of the course, where they can discuss with us any question they have. They can share their training videos, they can get instant feedback on their progress. Beside that we are offering live coaching sessions where we check our students progress live, we can correct them and can give them tailored advice. This combined with the video lessons is a powerful method for teaching.

- Workshops and camps, personal training visits. Time to time we are organizing workshops and camps, where our students can meet us in person and are able to train with us. After a certain level this is necessary for the right progress. Join our open community group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/417238663317752

Most people who try to learn traditional martial arts online never get very far.

Not because they lack discipline.
Not because the system doesn’t work.

Because they are left alone.

They watch videos.
They try to copy.
They get uncertain.
And eventually… they stop.

That’s not a student problem.

It’s a platform problem.

For months, we’ve been building something different.

Not just a new website.

A different way of learning.

What if an online school could actually guide you — not just show you?

The new MyChowGar platform is built around this idea.

Not as a video library.
But as a complete learning experience, structured around the system itself.

Here’s what that means:

👉 You follow a clear path — no guessing what comes next
👉 Every lesson tells you what to focus on, what to feel, and what most people get wrong
👉 You can explore deeper through a knowledge base built on the actual curriculum
👉 You always know where you stand — and what it takes to move forward
👉 You train in your own language (8 subtitles)
👉 You can track your development and build your own training notes

This is not for people who want to collect techniques.

It’s for those who want to understand, develop, and stay on the path.

The new platform is now live.

If you’ve been curious about Chow Gar…
or looking for a way to train properly online…

There was a time when people didn’t just watch Chuck Norris — they turned him into a myth.

It started with jokes.

Chuck Norris doesn’t do push-ups. He pushes the Earth down.
He doesn’t miss calls. Alexander Graham Bell had a missed call from him.

At some point, it even became normal to joke that he might outlive… everything.
The world. Time. Maybe even the end of the universe.

And the strange thing is — part of us almost believed it.

Not literally.
But in that half-serious way people believe in symbols.

Through his films, through his connection to Bruce Lee, and through decades of staying active while others disappeared, he became more than just an actor or a martial artist.

Now he’s gone.

Which feels strange, because for years the world treated him like someone untouchable.
Like death itself would hesitate.

There’s even that old joke:
He’s been dead for 20 years — death was just too afraid to tell him.

Behind the memes, behind the exaggeration, there was real respect.
Because you don’t become a legend like that by accident.

He didn’t know Chow Gar.
But if he had… who knows.
Maybe he would have stayed a little longer.
Or at least made his last battle… slightly unfair.

Rest in peace.
The myth will survive.

The Gatekeeper: What Yung Mun Yan Means and How It Was Passed

In traditional Chinese martial arts, the title of Yung Mun Yan (掌門人) — often translated as "Gatekeeper" — carries a meaning far deeper than a ceremonial rank. The Gatekeeper is the guardian of the system's integrity, the one entrusted to preserve its teachings, uphold its standards, and ensure its authentic transmission to future generations.

This is not a title that can be claimed, voted upon, or assumed by seniority alone. It is passed directly from the previous Gatekeeper — and only the Gatekeeper has the authority to name his successor.

The 2003 Inauguration in Hong Kong

In 2003, a formal ceremony was held in Hong Kong in the presence of many respected figures from the martial arts community. At this event, the late Grandmaster Ip Shui — then 90 years old and having led the Tung Kong Chow Gar Praying Mantis system for decades — publicly announced his retirement and the transfer of his position.

His words, spoken before all those present, were clear:

"The Tong Chow Praying Mantis Kung Fu Association has existed for many years and now has students throughout the world. The tasks in running the association are many and at 90 years I've begun to feel the strain. As a result, I've had the intention to retire. And so I decide to pass on my position to my eldest son, David Ip. From this day forth, my son will be the Grandmaster and all duties and powers will fall onto him. I hope that everyone here today will continue to give their support to my son as they have done to me."

Merit and Wish — The Two Pillars

Grandmaster Ip Chee Keung did not inherit this title by birthright alone. He had trained under his father since childhood, dedicating his life to mastering and preserving the system. His skill, understanding, and commitment to the art earned him this responsibility.

In such cases, the relationship between father and son also carries a quiet depth. Years of close instruction and shared experience create a continuity that extends beyond formal teaching, supporting the faithful transmission of the system from one generation to the next.

There is also another dimension: the father's wish. Grandmaster Ip Shui did not merely acknowledge his son's ability — he expressed his personal hope that the community would stand behind him, just as they had supported him.

This combination of proven merit and the predecessor's explicit wish is what makes the succession legitimate and complete.

The Witnesses

Everyone present at that ceremony in 2003 — the martial artists, the guests, the community members — witnessed this moment. They heard the words. They saw the transfer of authority.

The video of this event still exists. The evidence is not hidden, debated, or ambiguous. It is documented and public.

Why This Matters

From time to time, questions arise about legitimacy and authority within martial arts lineages. When they do, the answer is simple: look at the source.

Grandmaster Ip Chee Keung is the Gatekeeper of Tung Kong Chow Gar Tong Long because his father — the previous Gatekeeper — named him so, publicly, before witnesses, based on his ability and with his blessing.

No other claim carries equal weight.

Every year at the end of June we gather for a few days of intensive training at the Chow Gar Summer Camp.

Three sessions a day.
Morning QiGong.
Forms, power training, partner work and long discussions about the system.

For many students this has become one of the most important moments of the training year.

This year the camp will take place again in Visegrád.

We also decided to open the possibility for a few people outside the program to join us for a few days and experience the training atmosphere.

If you are curious about joining this year, comment “Camp” below or send me a message and I will share the details.

You can also check the Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/4439913252993379

Last weekend I spent some time training with a small group of Tai Chi practitioners.

Several of them had more than 20 years of experience in Tai Chi and had also trained in other martial arts. So these were not beginners, but people who have been exploring internal principles for a long time.

During the session we worked on some of the exercises we use in Chow Gar to develop power through contact.

One example is what we call grinding arms.

At first the exercise usually starts with simple physical force. Two people push against each other and the power is quite direct and muscular.

But if you continue practicing, something interesting begins to happen.

The quality of the power changes.

Instead of pushing with isolated strength, the whole body begins to connect. The bridge becomes heavier and more stable, while at the same time remaining sensitive and responsive.

The power becomes alive.

You can feel the opponent’s force, adapt to it, control it, and redirect it. It is strong, but not rigid. Heavy, but not dead.

What was interesting is that the Tai Chi practitioners immediately recognised this quality. Many of them said it felt very similar to the internal qualities they aim for in push-hands training.

Different systems may follow different training paths, but often the deeper goal is very similar: developing connected, responsive power rather than relying on raw muscular strength.

In the video below, Bálint demonstrates this idea with our student Angel from Spain during a grinding arms exercise. You can see how the power evolves from simple force into something much heavier, more connected, and much harder to deal with.

Nobody is born with internal power.

In Chow Gar, power develops through stages:

Brute force → Long-lasting external → Internal power → Shock power.

Each stage connects the body differently and prepares the practitioner for the next level.

The system contains the whole path.

The real question is whether the practitioner can pass through the gates.

05/03/2026

Nobody is born with internal power.

In Chow Gar, power develops step by step.

First comes brute force (Cho Gang) — learning to connect the body through muscular effort.

Then comes long-lasting external power (Loi Gang) — where power becomes continuous and efficient.

These are only the first gates of development.

Knife defense.

Before anyone takes this seriously — this video was made for fun.

After watching countless unrealistic “knife defense” tutorials online, we decided to create our own exaggerated version.

Reality check:

If someone has a knife and real intent, the situation is extremely dangerous.
Technique is not magic.
Avoidance and awareness are your best defense.

Sometimes the most honest lesson is simple:

Don’t be there.

The Anniversary Period is coming to an end.

In a few hours, the 30% access window closes.

This was never about “cheap kung fu.”

It was about encouraging those who were hesitating to finally step forward.

If you have been watching.
If you have been thinking.
If you have been waiting.

This is the moment.

After tomorrow, pricing returns to normal.

We continue the work.
Structured. Direct. Authentic.
