This year’s Jabuka Race served us a full spectrum of offshore sailing conditions — from light downwind drifters to a strong Bora on the way back. Not exactly the ideal setup for a Pogo 12.50, but an unforgettable experience nonetheless.

For 80% of our crew, it was their first offshore race, and we couldn’t be prouder of how they handled it. The effort, the teamwork, and the will to push through the night were all there — even if our crew trimming discipline and performance focus still have big room to grow.

Out of 116 boats, we crossed the finish line after 17 hours and 31 minutes of racing (official time 21:51:55) and secured 56th overall, 8th in G11, and 16th in ORC A. No major mistakes, no drama, no damages — and a safe return to Vodice.

The result could’ve been better, but the learning curve was steep and the spirit was high — and that’s exactly what offshore racing is all about.

❓How to Handle an Emergency Gennaker Drop — Lessons from 25 Knots Downwind

Sometimes offshore, conditions change fast and you need to act even faster. On our recent delivery of a First 35 from Raiffeisen Trophy Inshore back to our home marina, we found ourselves running downwind from Kaštela to Murter with breeze building up to 25 knots. We were flying an A2 gennaker—a big sail for these conditions! Even with the main reefed and eased, the boat was pushing hard and it was clear: time to drop the gennaker.
But as it often happens, things didn’t go according to plan. The jib furler jammed, blocking our classic drop behind the jib. After a tense moment, we got it moving and managed a standard drop. But what if you can’t use the jib—or conditions are too wild for anyone to go forward?
That’s when you need to know your emergency drop techniques.
Here’s how we do it at m2yachting:

1️⃣ Emergency Cockpit Drop
• Lead the lazy sheet (inactive gennaker sheet) into the cockpit—ideally on the leeward side
• Fully ease the tack line to dump pressure from the sail
• The crew uses the lazy sheet to pull the gennaker straight into the cockpit—no one goes on the foredeck
2️⃣ Letterbox Drop (for extreme conditions or shorthanded crews)
• Lead the lazy sheet through the gap between the boom and the foot of the mainsail
• Ease the tack line to depower the gennaker
• Pull the sail down through the “letterbox” slot, keeping it under control and out of the wind
This method is especially useful for double-handed sailors or when the foredeck is just too risky. Both techniques let you stay safe, keep control, and protect your crew and gear—even when things get wild.

Pro tips from m2yachting:
• Practice these drops in moderate conditions before you need them for real
• Always communicate clearly—everyone should know their role before you start
• Don’t wait too long to drop sail if the wind is building
• Safety first: if in doubt, play it safe and go for the emergency drop
