隨著時代發展, 不少「傳統武術」已發展成為「運動」, 令精緻的「傳統武術」逐漸失真, 失去其抗敵自保的原意。如今劍道、空手道、柔道等近代武術運動普及盛行, 而百年傳統的「日本居合劍術」卻鮮為人知, 是傳統的「日本武士武術」文化以「肢體分離」的方式流傳下去的結果, 實在是時代進步的一大損失。


日本古流劍術正是修練瞬間拔刀術擊倒四周的敵人、集自身安全技倆、衝出敵陣的武術。現代流行的劍道運動則是學習使用竹劍、穿上護甲的對打運動。無論在握劍、揮劍、運力、身法、攻防技巧及戰鬥概念，都和傳統居合術有很大的差異。
