Stand and move with your back and neck straight, maintaining your centerline.

Relax your body, lower your center (Tanden) in a relaxed state, move from your center (Tanden) and core, and use that movement from your center (Tanden) to move your arms and other limbs.
Do not rely on arm strength.

Move your body to the appropriate position with the minimum number of steps.
Do not use short steps. (Using short steps is for adjusting positioning, and it means you haven't moved to the right place.)

Don't lunge forward and wait for your opponent.
Rather, pull back and move as if accepting your opponent, incorporating their initial movement.

The above points are common to both unarmed combat and swordsmanship.
